I'm from Pocahontas county WV and we have a lot of bear there; in fact I saw more bear this past season than I did deer.  I've never hunted Charleston so can't help you out with that but if you can make the drive to Pocahontas it would be worth the trip.  There's quite a bit of public land available and the best places for bear are usually pretty rugged and really thick with laurel making it darn near impossible to hunt but it can be done.
Chasing my kids and my degree for now but come next fall the critters better look out.  ;)

I'm starting from scratch. What are the names of some of the public areas and what are the odds of tagging out

Seneca state forest, Monongahela national forest are 2 that I know of.  Here's a link that will be helpful:    http://www.wvdnr.gov/Hunting/WMAMap.shtm

I really can't say you're odds of tagging out but you will definitely see lots of sign.  If you're an experienced hunter and have some knowledge of bear habitat and behavior then your chances of seeing and killing a bear will go way up.

There is some good Bear hunting around Charleston but if you want to go. I know a lot of bear hunters all around the senaca, Spruce knob, and Dolly sods areas. We have a blast Bear hunting up here. If your interested just shoot me an email.
