momentum question
« on: December 20, 2013, 12:03:00 AM »
I can find tons of info on KE, but I am struggling to find anything about amount of momentum reccomended for big game like elk and moose.  I have only hunted white tails and hogs, including some 300#ers.  My setups are 560grains at 186fps or .46 momentum tipped with 200gn woodsman elite.  And 743 grains at 160fps or .53momentum tipped with 250 grain abowyer wapiti. (75gn steel adaptor) 20&21% FOC accordingly. They both fly extremely well. I feel that both will do the job on elk and the heavier would do the job on larger moose or bison sized animals.  What says the crowd?

BTW I'm shooting a 60" 63#@28(my draw28.25) Zipper Nitro carbon/foam limbs

There is a link to an article on the tuffhead  website about momentum vs. kinetic energy. The author talks about values pertaining to African game. He figures anything over .40 is enough for even the largest plains game including Kudu(elk sized) and eland(moose/bison sized) With that being said, I believe you have more than enough for ANY north American animal with either arrow.

I have taken many large animals(over 500lbs) with a lot less than your shooting and with only a 26" draw.

Here is a Zebra I took w/ 51#@26" w/ a 500gr arrow

I've shot completely through everything from whitetails, bull elk, and a 505# black bear using a bow/arrow combo that develops .57 momentum and wouldn't hesitate to hunt any animal that walks with it.  It's a 72#@27" Bear T.D. with 820 gr. hickory shafts.

KE tells you nothing about how your arrow will perform on game. The formula gives you a bit of a clue; speed squared

Its all about having perfect arrow flight with decent weight.
of course the 700gr is a penetrating monster but I think you are fine with the 560gr.
