inventory software for your collection?
« on: June 11, 2003, 04:01:00 PM »
What software do you use to keep track of your collection? I'm looking for one to keep track of my 150+/- bows and other archery collectables. I cant spend big bucks on Access. Any ideas?

Well, the first question would be, what do  you want it to do for you? Just keep track of what you have? Allow you to search your database for specific characteristics of each bow, like all bear recurves?

Below are some websites I found on a search. I had a friend that wanted to cataloge her CD collection.
Some of these use bar code readers which I sorta liked.
For my broadhead collection I use Excel. I have also used Access a little bit.

Excel would be a good and inexpensive way to do it.  You could have columns for the categories that you wanted to search/sort under. Then you just needed to do your sort and then look down the list until you find the grouping that you wanted. It is quick and dirty but it would probably do what you wanted.  I use this approach when manipulating data at work all the time.

Archery_Collector, I’m sorry if this throws your post off

In the past I’ve wanted to write a program similar to this, but seeing as how I only own 3 bows I’ve never had a need. Now that I see there is actualy a need for this type of thing my interest is sparked. Could you guys tell me what you would want out of a program like this?

My thought on it so far. You would want your information to be stored in a plain text file. This way you could always put it on a floppy for backup. Your information should be searchable. Your information should be reported in a clear and easy way to understand the results after search.

Now if you guys could tell me what that information you would like to store is. IE:
(Brand)(Model)(Condition)(Poundage)(Year)...etc

A long time ago I wrote a program similar but it was for my handgun loads. It was for my PDA (pocket PC) which I took to the range with me. My latest one was an Atkins diet reference for my PDA. Everything I write is FREE as this would be too.

How do you guys feel about this?

PS if your interested to see the Atkins diet thing for you pocket PC it's right here
