I'm no expert but it seems to me that value is a hard thing to pin down. my understanding is they only made the doglegs one year so they are rare but the design was flawed so the value is hurt. you dont say what model it is, I think most of bears models for that year were doglegs so the model would affect value. Ive seen them go for as low as $60 to several hundred (big ballpark) on ebay so in the end I reckon the value is whatever someone at the time of your sell, is willing to pay. There are several fellas here that know alot more than me, maybe someone else will be of more help. Im just bored and feel like running my mouth, sorry I couldnt be of more help.

About two years ago I got a  '63 60" 50# KODIAK off eBAY.  I paid $375.00 for it.  Now  I would think the 50# would bring a better price than the 45#, but that depends on what the buyer wants.  Old bows are like antiques in that they are worth whatever someone is willing to pay.  No more-no less.  I may or may not be right here but I think I great buy on my dogleg. In my humble opinion, mine is worth $500.00.  However, that does not mean I will find someone willing to pay that for it.  I would put your 45# at about $400-$450.  In the condition you describe, that bow is a real collectors item.  Don't be scared to shoot it.  I don't know of anyone ever having problems with the 60" dogleg.  It was the 52" Kodiak Magnum dogleg (Type I & Type II) that had the crack-up reputation.

You got a great bow there

It is sometimes great to buy from "CRAPPY PHOTOS".

Mine was listed as a '62 model and the photo was really bad.  I could just make out enough to see it was  dogleg.  The description said "like new condition" but the guy also stated that he knew nothing about bows.  His wife got it at an estate sale for $20.00.  It belonged to a doctor that bought it in 1963, shot it a fer times, then put it in the case in the attic where it stayed for the next 40 years.  After his death his widow had an estate sale to dispose of his things.  It is very unusual to find one in teh condition.  Except for som slight scrapes on the arrow plate, it looks like it could have come out of a sealed box.

Don't ever be hesitant to ask any questions on TRAD GANG.  That is what the site is for.  What happened on your last question that made you gun shy?  Anyone that treated your question with anything but respect was not following the spirit of the board.

On your 45#.  The 50# is more to my liking, but there were more 45# kodiaks made by bear than any other weight.  You see some 50's, even fewer 55's.  Anything over that is very rare although I have seen 70-75# Kodiaks, but I am sure those were special order.  However, they are aout there.

Have you shot yours, or is it a beautiful decorative wall-hanger.  Don't be scared to shoot it, but take care not to mark it up.  In that condition it is a real collectors bow.

I see you are in LAKELAND, FL.  An excellent contact for you is   LYN BUSBEY.  He ahs Traditional Archery Sales in Lakeland.  It is a traveling Archery Shop.  He makes most of teh big 3-D shoots in the Southeast.  He specializes in used bows and has many Bears.  He is very knowledeable about Bear Bows.  You should bring it to him for his appraisal, but be warned, he will try to get you to sell it, and at a low price so he can make a profit.  Understandable becaus he is in business.  I am going to send you
a PM with his contact info rather than post it on line

Jack,Thanks for the information.I havn't shot the bow yet.It came without a string and I havn't made one for it yet.I have put one on from one of my other bows and pulled it and the limbs were straight.Got burned on that before.I have another Kodiak,55#,that came out of a trash pile. It's in good shape except somebody drilled the side and put an insert in.
Lyn and his wife Jerry are good friends and I've sold some bows to him when I needed money.I'm not desperate now and I didn't want to get lowballed.I know he's in business and he tells you what he'll pay and he's honest. For your info ,If you don't have it ,Another person is Tony Wolf in Orlando,A bear dealer and buyer. Thanks again Eddie

You seem to be on top of your Bear contacts.  Lyn is a good guy to know.  He is fair.  I have done some swapping and selling with him.

Let me know what Lyn's opinion of retail value is.  Just curious to see how he calls it VS what I called it.  Keep in ming I am calling it sight unseen.

TONTO

I have a TYPE I KO DIAK MAGNUM.

It was one that hun g in the Greyling museum until it closed.  It is stamped DISPLAY, and had never been strung.  Well, when I got it in it had no string so of course I had to take one off another KOD MAG I have.  Like a fool, I strung it up.  I flexed it lightly a few times and let it sit strung over night.  Next day I pulled it to full draw.  The upper limb exploded. It split right down the middle of the core laminations.  I had someone glue it back together, buT it is a wall hanger now.

The type I is the one that Had the crackup problems.  That is why you don't see them that often.  If you ever get one, DO NOT STRING IT UP.

TYPE II's are pretty bad too.  I think the TYPE III's are ok to shoot
