Another broadhead thread (Sorry!)

I've just aquired a dozen of the MA-3 broadheads.
I've been looking at these for ages at 3-Rivers and wondered what everyone's thoughts are on these li'l things?
I know a fair few folks use them for small game, but how about for pig/deer sized animals? I've mounted one on a 75gn adapter & given it a sharpen & found it to be really easy to get to a great edge. It's only sightly narrower than a Woodsman, but considerably shorter & looks to be a much more solid head.
Does anyone use these? If so, what are your thoughts/findings?
Looking at the thing, I can't really understand why they don't seem to be too popular...

I have some and have only shot them at targets.They fly well and with that said theyll be good for deer and pigs.

I had about 100 of these at a time. Planed to use them too, but as for now all they did for me is practise shooting - or better call it messing around. As it's a very cheap head, though quite tough it can take a punishment and you don't have to worry about wasting big money. It also lends itself to be "pimped" into different (?usefull) things now and then    :D        

If you need a pipe reamer to remove coal crust - they work real nice:

I also make a special bird-/small game point from them - which I call MA-Barker. Quite silly name, yes I know, but that's what I called them once and it seems I am unable to change it ever again ...

In general:
Their construction is is fairly old and to be found in many different broadheads of their time (i.e. early Bodkins, Hill Hornets etc). The one problem with all of them is, if you sharpen them double bevel, as most people probably would do, you have the copper braze along the edge. No good. I've always sharpened them single bevel to get steel into the edge.

I was introduced to M-A 3's by an old timer back in 1959. I took several deer with them until my fickleness made me go on to try other heads. They're a good head for the money. Here's a picture of my first Whitetail that was taken with an M-A 3. Yep, that's me with my bare face hanging out.      :D

Dang Falk how hard is it to make them bird and game heads? You ever swap them out? That looks like a great bunny head. And wow Mr.LaClair I was born in 1959.

Frank just put them on your grinder wheel, with the knives you make shouldn't be much work.  I do admit they look pretty nice Falk.  Thanks...Doc

I killed my first deer with an MA3L when I was 14. Sorry I was even more camera shy then than I am now. I still hate to have my picture taken but I sorely miss having pictures from my early teen years.
They were hard to get for a time. Since I have seen they are available again I have thought about going back to them. I am now and always have been a 3 blade fan. MA3L broadheads are what planted that seed.

Frank, well, I've sold some via the auction side in the past, yes. But I guess they will be far to expensive for you to use them as rabbit points. I need to calculate all my spend international postage into it - PLUS the "pimping" itself. If you really want some, PM me.

Jack Howard used to glue razor blades snapped at an angle to them with epoxy.  It was a cool system, but my mom and my wife hated the smell of the mess curing in the oven.

I have used them off and on for about 35yrs.They sharpen nice but dont hold a edge as well as zwickey's if your putting them in an out of a quiver.

I have bought 2000 of them.  They're almost all gone.  The reason I started shooting them - the guy who got me to switch from shooting a compound to shooting a bow shot them.  I don'd think he'd object to me mentioning his name - Barry Smith, Alpine Taxidermy, CO.  Ten or 15 years ago I asked him how many animals he had in the "Book".  The answer was 24, all shot with and MA-3.

He recenly switched to the WW with terrible results.  Traded for my last 75 and is back with the MA-3'.

There's two types of MA-3's - MA-3S and L.  If you compare the L to the WW it's wider, not narrower, so I think your looking at a S.  I don't think you can get narrower than a WW and be legal in all states.

The heads short coming - when sharpening if you take off too much material you'll never get it sharp.  Those rounded shoulders make it a beautiful design for penetration.
