Early 1959 Kodiak
« on: December 23, 2007, 02:20:00 PM »
This was on the auction board and just couldn't resist!

There is some tape residue, and the ink has faded completely;but you can still read the numbers. It strings up and shoots very nicely.

Saw that one the night they listed it. I told my wife those folks probably don't realize they are about to be 1K richer! What are the specs on this one? Good hit BJorn! CKruse

It is 60" and 48# . Bowdoc, how do I go about tracing the gold lettering back-the outline is still there and you got any recommendations to remove the hardened tape residue without hurting the Fullerplast?
Thanks in advance.
Dang Jeremy you got any pics of the Damascus?

If you have a good stedy hand,unlike the bowdocs.You can go over it with Testers gold paint and a caligrify pen,ultra fine nibb will help alot.Buy a fresh bottle of gold and stir it will.But hold on just one second,before you do go over the lettering with the gold....Are you sure it's gold and not factory black????? Without getting into a pissen match with collecters.Please note a couple things.... no coin no coin hole does not mean that was the earliest model 1959 Kodiak.Bear bulit bows for several different companys and some may not have had coins do to request of the purchaser.They did not want the coins or in some cases ie like Viking Archery did not even want bears name on the bows and added a Viking decal to them,rather then any Bear name at all.(Sears bows only had the lower Bear silk screen).But most for Viking had coins.Bear soon dropped that pratice,cause it was loseing free advertizement with Bears name not on the bow.But with that said,early maple sight windows Kodiaks no coin hole were generly lettered in black india ink rather then gold ink.I can send you a free sample of bowdocs bow polish to remove the tape residue right after the holiday......bd

The price of the free sample is free for you my friend.You are a good customer.I should have new bottles in on we. or th.I think everyone is closed until then.Send me pm with your shipping addie or you may still have my old email you can send me your shipping info.I'am not sure if it's OK to post my new email addie on here?????????I will fix you up with some polish asap.Yes the old black india ink trick on the 1959's have fooled plenty of us looking like faded gold.That bow was most likely built late (nov or dec)1958 maybe early 1959(the catalogs did not come out until march of 1959 but salesmen had samples of the 1959 K's to show customers before the cats.came out).Thats one rare son of a Bear no dout about it............bd

Bjorn;
Do you plan to put a new finish on the bow ? If so, I have a solution for refreshing the "Specs". It will look JUST like the original. Yes, it's a decal with the specs replicated on it, but I make them @ home. Any color including Gold.

Al, the transfers you supplied for my 'white glass '57 were beautiful, and went on perfectly. So any other developments you have will get my attention. Spec lettering is especially hard to replicate-typically it was done by ladies who were selected for their handwriting skills.

OK the 'magic juice' from bowdoc arrived this evening. I couldn't wait to use the stuff on this early Kodiak. Wanna see the result?

Now scroll back up and have a look at the 'before'. The 50 year old tape residue, which was rock hard, dissolved without hurting the original finish. Bowdoc, you da' man!!
