Any way to get rid of the yellow....
« on: January 01, 2008, 11:50:00 PM »
in a finish, short of complete refinishing?  I have a two 1950's Bear Cubs, one of which has a great finish and the back glass is still looks nice and gray.  The other has finish that has yellowed badly, to the point that the gray glass doesn't look gray anymore, except where it is chipped off on the ends of the bow.  Bowdoc gave me some good advice concerning refinishing (thanks!), but I just realized how yellow it is when I hung it next to the other that still has a good finish.

Is there anything I can try to remove the yellow, short of a refinish?  Thanks.

Hi Ron,if you were tring to get rid of the yellowing,I would most likely try some automotive rubbing compound.About a medium grit.Don't let the compound set on the surface, but rather apply a little bit to a rag and work a small area at a time. That may get rid of about half. The old finish is actuly dried out and sometimes ( not always) but sometimes the compound will help alot. Then apply a nice thin coat of Johnsons paste wax.Could get rid of about half the yellowing.bd

Different strokes! I'm not a fan of white glass, so I like the 'patina' on the old glass.
1958 Kodiaks age beautifully, the plain white glass turns to a grayish dirty white-like whalebone when it is polished.
