Aloha from Juneau, Alaska.  I am a frequent visitor or try to be.  I have been making it a point to hunt the islands twice a year for the last couple years.   Have hunted your island twice last year from tip to tip on the Kona side, goats, pigs, feral sheep, and mouflon.  Which side are you on?

This year I went to Kauai in July and I am headed back to Kauai TOMORROW--hurray!

Love hunting the Big Island for the diversity of game however!

Hey Mark,
Welcome to Tradgang.  Mark and Kawika....if all goes well, I'll be bringing the family to the Big Island in July '09 for our 20th wedding anniversary.  I want to chase some pigs while I'm there....maybe some goats.  I'll be in touch.

Aloha All!
Been out sick a few days----flu---ugh! Was caught off guard when I logged on and saw all the replies. Thanks Gang --- made me feel like one of the family. I'd like to say "Howzit to all the brahdahs on the other islands, past visitors, soldiers who were stationed or are stationed in our state, and anybody thinking of visiting Hawaii.

If anybody is planning to visit Hawaii, give me a holler. If I can get off from work maybe we can set something up. If not, maybe I can point you in the right direction ( I must add however this diclaimer; my wife says its a bad idea to ask for my advise).

Mahlo, Mark

Howzit Brahdah Steve H. and Greyfox 54. I forgot to reply to your questions.
I live on the east side of the Big Island-- da wet side. More rural and laid back here than the west side.
The areas that I hunt are mostly broken lava fields with trees and grass scattered throughout. Elevation is around 6000 to 8000 feet above sea level. Nice an cool like the mainland with little humidity. Lava fields consists mostly of a'a; a brittle and jagged lava. It sounds like broken glass when you walk on it----very cruchy.(Guess why they call it A'A? Fall down and you kinda get the idea.)and Pahoehoe (a smooth flowing lava). As you can imagine I tend to stay as much as possible on the smooth stuff. Guess where the game likes to hang out?
Ground is nothing like the Napali Coast. You got big ones brahdah Greyfox if you've hunted down there. I flew over several times and saw many goats up on the back side of the valley. When I looked into the hunt route, that ended all desire to hunt da valley. Hope I answered your questions.
Aloha,
       Mark

Hey Mark is there any 3D shoots run on the Big Island. The wife and I used to visit the Big Island in Feb & Mar each year.....took 7 years off (kids) but may start doing it again. Figured if the are any shoots between Nov and end of March, we could try and work it into our escape the cold (Northern British Columbia)plans there, for a change of pace from spending the whole day in or under the water. ?????

Howzit Ginadoix,

Funny you should ask about 3D shoots on the Big Island. Right now we (Hawaii Island Archers) are in the planning stages of holding one on the 23rd of Feb. If things go right it will be held at Kaohe Game Management area on Mauna Kea. Usually we will have about 28 3D animals on the course. The shoot will be a one day event and usually we shoot until lunch, break for lunch and afternoon the awards are given out. As of yet, I don't know if lunch will be part of the entry fee.

Last time I went to a shoot in Kona, we had a large group of Traditonal arrow flingers in attendence. Hopefully alot people from the outter islands come as well.

Hope you can make it -----should be alot of fun!

Let me know and I will keep you posted.

Aloha,

        Mark

Heck, there is so much game on the BI you don't NEED 3-D targets, just use the real thing!

I suspect I have killed more big critters in HI than any other state now!

Feb 23...dang it wont line up this year, we are looking at Mid March in 2008, trying to balance two careers getting time off at same time stuff etc....  But I am gonna keep in touch with ya next fall when we start planning. After the fun we had at last years Long Bow Safari in Big Valley Alberta I have the wife hooked.

Is this late February  shoot an anual event or does it happen basicaly when enough people have enough volunteer time to get one of the ground. A lot of work goes into staging one so I know its tough to say its gonna be every year at time "A".

Well Mark.  I was out in the back yard this afternoon a shot some arrows.  I lost 2 today because I could not find them in the 2 1/2 feet of snow.  MAN YOUR LUCKEYYYYY
A bad day of hunting is still far better than a good day at work.
