Arrow Selection?
« on: October 16, 2008, 04:36:00 PM »
I currently dont have my Kodiak Hunter any arrows.  What would you guys reccommend? I wouldnt mind experimenting with wood.  This would be a first for me.  I'm a ROOKIE.  I'm not into cresting and making them pretty as of yet.  I just need something to hunt with.  I feel like older bows deserve wood arrows.  I would like a fairly heavy point on the front.  Mabey 225grns

Any suggestions?

What's your draw length and weight of your bow?

We have sponsors here that can fix you up with wood arrows, but those are two vital pieces of info.

Personally, I prefer aluminum.

Wood, Aluminum, Carbon, Fiberglass..all personal choice.

As Blackhawk said, your best bet is to get with a traditional shop or supplier and let them recommend what particular shaft you need for your setup.

Another good idea is to try a variety of sahft material and spines until you find what fits "YOU" best.  This can best be done at a local traditional shoot where many guys will let you try their arrows.

In my opinion, the only thing important about cresting or painting would be with wood shafts to make sure you seal the raw shafts against moisture.  Aluminum, Carbon, OR fiberglass won't make a big difference.

The most important part of your hunting setup is the broadhead.  The rest is just the delivery system.

If I have any that match your setup, I'll send you a few to try out.  I've been an arrow making fool this past summer.  I can only carry four at a time.  let us know what your draw length and weight is.

The kodiak is 45# @ my 28" draw.

Blackhawk.  I have some  xx75 2016 full legnth that came with my set for my longbow 53# @ 28".  I think they would be overspined for  the 45# kodiak.  Couldnt I just add more tip wieght to compensate for the lighter bow(kodiak)? (with longer shaft)  My longbow arrows are cut to 29".

Maybe this would get me shooting the kodiak until I get some woodies.

I don't have any made up that are that light.

I bet the 2016s would work with 145 or 160 up front if they are full length.

For 45# Kodiaks, my two favorites are the 1916 and 2114, both with 125 gr. tips.  These arrow weights are around 440-450 gr.

Trap is right in that your 2016's at full length should also work.

Thanks guys!

I'm going to give the 2016s a try.  I've always used tips only.  What the best way to bump up the weight up front?  I currently have 125 grn.

Get heavier tips is the best way.  At full length, your 125 may work.
