Super K arrived - brace ht?
« on: December 04, 2008, 03:35:00 PM »

This bow arrived today (see "Super Kodiak info?" thread). It is in better than advertised condition but has a couple minor flaws.

First - the sight was not with it. I have followed up to see if the seller will send the sight. This sight was listed as "broken" in the item description, but I still wanted to play with it.

Second - it had a twisted bottom limb, but this responded quickly to the bathtub hot tap method and appears to be stable in the straightened position.

The Dacron endless loop original string (AMO 60") makes it brace at 9.75" from the throat of the grip. Is this about right for a 1972 Super K?

The rug rest is serviceable but worn and the strike plate looks like the rubbery base plate for an elevated rest. What is the correct rest and strike for this model?

Screw holes from the sight mounting... may fill and finish if I do a refinish of the entire bow. Waiting for info on the sight first.

Shaun, I use Super Ks pretty regularly and I've found they perform better overall with a pretty high brace but 9.75 seems a little high to me-I usually run about .75 to a full inch lower. Your arrow selection and form will be factors as well as I'm sure you know. I don't know how much you've shot the bow yet but at 50# this string will probably stretch a bit which will give you a few more options. I bet its quiet like this though. Good luck with your new bow,  Grant

I've got a 60" SK from 1976 (55#) and I find it shoots best around 8.5".  ...and yeah, the string you have should stretch a little.  Good shooting ahead, ok?

Shaun, I kave 2 SKs (1971) #45 and #55. Both like a little over 7 3/4 brace height. The strike plate on my #55 is calf hair and I think it is the original one. On the #45 I have the premier sight. Hope this helps - Simon

I know this is a pain in the butt, but you may want to try at 7 1/2" 8 1/2" which usely calls for at least two different strings.Supers have a pretty good range that the brace can be set at.I've seens guy's shoot them at just over 7" and some up to 8 1/2"-8 3/4".9" would be maybe getting to high and lossing a little proformece.Keep us posted.bowdoc

I have a 64'' 1970 SK,shoot 300 mfx bemans out of it at 33'' draw length. It's really sweet and forgiving for me at 8.25 brace 3/8 nock pt.Play around with it and take your time,it'll show up.
