WOW!!!
« on: January 12, 2009, 10:24:00 AM »
I'm new to traditional archery, and this is my first time to ever visit this part of the forum.  Some of you may have seen my posts in the pow-wow section or the knife making section, as I have really started to get involved in this.  Seeing the history of the sport through all of yall's collections is just amazing!!

Having a small collection of indian artifacts that I  spent many hours laboring to collect, I have often considered beginning a collection of old broadheads.    After seeing this forum, I now know that I apparently wasn't the first to think of this.  I was just wondering how yall got started, where to look and if there is any references or books that you could help me find.  This forum has definitely caught my attention in an addicting way!!(hehe)

Thanks,
Rick

Hey Rick welcome to the club. There is an excellent broadhead reference book available on e8ay I believe. Also, there is a broadhead collectors club that is a great way to get information and network a little. Amercian Broadhead Collectors Club, ABCC for short. Good luck with your archery interests!

There is a book by Wade Phillips Broadheads 1871-1971 Very good book. A little pricey but well worth the investment if you are serious about broadhead collecting.

Thanks guys,  I'll have to check out those books.  One question though.  Is **** a good place to find older heads, or do yall go to guns and knife shows? I guess what I'm asking is do you have any tips where to look for points?

Thanks,
Rick

Welcome Rick.  I don't collect things that cost too much, so I don't go to that auction site with the intent of buying.  I do use the site that shall not be named to see what is out there.

I only have a few different broadheads, nothing you would call a collection.  I have found a few at garage sales, a couple from a flea market, but the majority have come from friends that I've met by being involved in a local traditional archery club.  Good luck in your search.

Whatever you do, don't start collecting Bear bows, it becomes a sickness very quickly!:-)

That auction site is a great place to find old heads. Just do your research and search the vintage archery items. You can score some good old heads if you spend some time looking at auctions.

I have been collecting broadheads for a little over 20 years and currently have about 450. I don't collect screw ons.

Joining the ABCC is a must, just to be able to identify some of the treasues you will find. I also ran into some real good trades through that organization when I first stated out.

I have been lucky in my quest by coming into three seperate windfalls. A combination Archery/Gun store and Old Man hangout went out of business after almost 40 years. I was in there one day as they were cleaning out a bunch of junk. I bought a computer paper box full of bear razorheads still in the packs, an assortment of about every Bohning head ever made, 4 different colored Mohawks, and about 30 other loose heads. Paid $25.00 for the box.

I was in another state and stopped in an old gas station to buy a drink. Saw a bunch of old archery tackle laying around and asked the owner if he had any old broadheads he was willing to sell. He handed me a cigar box full of broadheads, most I had never seen before. Said he was getting ready to toss them in the dumpster and I was welcome to them if I wanted them.

When Gene Wensel was packing up to move from Montana to Ill. he advertised a lot of his stuff in the P.B.S. magazine. I called him up and he was purging his broadhead collection. I ended up buying I believe it was 75 broadheads off of him. He placed each of them in individual sandwich bags and labeled them as to their brand and manufacture prior to placing then in plastic trays and shipping them to me. A nice gesture and a very good thing as unless you know what you are looking for all of the Bear heads look pretty much the same and he sent me a pile of different ACE heads that I would have had trouble differientating between. I paid him $3.00 each for them.

I have a bunch of them mounted on the wall in my "Man Room" and hardly anyone can walk in wihtout stopping to admire them. The quest for a new addition can be very addictive.

Wow, RVTB, it seems the stars aligned a few times for you!!

I'm sure I'll be asking a lot of questions along the way.  Thanks for all the help and support guys.

RICK

Alot of it is just being at the right place at the right time, even if that is on e8ay.

I will bet that RVTB will tell you that that box of Bear razorheads and other broadheads is not his most cherished find.  While I am sure he is thrileld to get them, the most cherished finds are the ones you rout out, happen to run across in ones and twos, find on e8ay with a wrong description so not many bid on them.  You will find that the end result of buying anything is not the most satisfying thing...it is the quest for them.  You search and search and finally find what you are looking for, and the quest is over,  Oh well, what now?  Start looking for something else.

Papalapin,

I definitely know what you are talking about.  When digging for arrowheads, it's not the arrowhead that I remember, it's the moment I found it. This is true of all of them with the exception of one knife blade I found that I still love just looking staring at...
