Anyone ever seen this before?
« on: February 12, 2009, 01:38:00 PM »
I have a Bear Grizzly,1959 or 1960,not sure.It looks like other Grizzly's I've owned in the past other than it not having a coin. But I seem to remember the '59 and '60 Grizzly's having the same color glass on the belly as the Kodiaks from the same years, that kinda burnt orange color. The back has the pea green glass which I believe they all do but the belly glass on this one is more of a light tan. It's similar in color to the glass on that experimental Kodiak Special I have from 1957 I believe is the year.I have a picture showing the two together.Since I don't collect Grizzly's I'm not real sure on the glass color.Has anyone else seen this color glass on a Grizzly from these years?

John - Unusual bow. Show it to Lonnie, he is the Grizzly collector & will probably make you a nice trade offer for it...

Some of the 1960 Grizzlys had a fat grip like some of the 1960 Kodiaks. Laminations above the sight window were also different in some of the fat grip Grizzlys.

This one has a real nice, small grip like on a '59 Kodiak.Looking closer at the tips they appear to be micarta so it's most likely a '59 model.Didn't they usually have the orange glass on the belly?

I thought the 1960 grizzly was all camo?
I was born with nothing and I still have most of it left.

Bowdoc, is the belly glass tan colored like mine or is it burnt orange? Gotta picture of the belly side?

Chuck I believe this is a '59 grizzly. The tips appear to be micarta. I have seen 60 grizzly's that look the same as the 59 but with fiberglass overlays. I think 61 grizzly's came with factory camo.

Is that a Rosewood laminate on the coin side of the sight window or walnut?  Looks reddish in the pic.  No Coin, Dark slab on the coin side, unusual colored belly.   That's one very cool Grizzly.

For a few years I focused on '59 and '60 Grizzlies before moving to Kodiaks, and still consider those Grizzlies exceptional.
I found that the glass colors on both years were the same; light green on the back and that light brown on the belly.
The '59 has Micarta tips just as you said. The coinless deal represents an early 1959 in my experiance. And the layers of dark wood resulting in those twin 'chevrons' below the leather wrap were typically '59 and single chevron has always been seen on a 1960-in my experience.
Like Wade said some 1960's had fat grips and even had serial numbers that were configured differently-like a '61 which was the factory camo bow that year only.
That is indeed a nice, unusual bow John and well worth keeping.

Trap-I'm not sure what the wood is on the "coinless" side.If it's walnut or rosewood.I'd have to take a closer look at it when I get home. Are they usually walnut?
Bowdoc-That's the color of glass I was talking about, that orange-ish color. This one doesn't have it.
Bjorn-I'll have to see about the double chevrons you mentioned.I think it has two but I'm at work now.I'll look when I get home.It is a beautiful bow, just has some stress lines in the lower limb. That is one of Traps feather rests. It looks perfect!

Trap-Looking back at the photos, the wood on the coin-less side is more of a rosewood look than the lighter walnut shown on the two bows in Doc's picture.Same wood as the sight window, real dark reddish. It's a beautiful bow.Man,Bear was happening in '59 and '60 when it came to bows.

Let me warn you. Those Grizzly's may be worse then Kodiaks when it comes to ood ducks.I would bet money yours is rosewood and my two are walnut. But my ibean on my no coin is some weird wood I've only seen in about 10 or so bear bows and 3-4 of those were 1958 KS.pics soon bd

Brent(hormoan),
Thanks. It really is a beautiful bow, except for the stress cracks in the lower limb.  "[dntthnk]"
