Cody - I would suggest that you start collecting the 1940s "Archery" Magazine which has many photographs of Ande Vale with game and a lot of text about his hunting exploits.

"Archery" was printed monthly begining 1n Feb 1944. The 71 issues printed during the 1940s will be well worth the investment. You will see all the greats, Fred Bear, Nels Grumley, Howard Hill, the Wilhelm boys, Tom Imler, all the old time greats who were still alive in the 1940s are pictured. Lots of great stories, hundreds of advertistements by all the national manufacturers. Lots of Michigan history is recorded in "Archery" Magazine.

You need to start building an archery library for reference and your education.

Cody - TAM ran from 1952 to 1964. Many of your questions are about the 1930s and 1940s, so even a complete set of TAM would be of little use in learning about the time period that you seem most interested in.

Complete sets of these three archery magazines are an absolute "must have" for your interests…

1927-1943 "Ye Sylvan Archer" ("YSA") reprints are available in the Legends of the Longbow series. Complete sets of original "YSA" are rare. Fewer then a dozen complete sets of originals are known to exist in private collections. "YSA" and "California Bowmen-Hunter" merged to become "Archery".

1944-1969 "Archery" Printed from Feb 1944 to Nov/Dec 1979, then started latter, but most of the later issues have nothing about the 1930-40s. Fairly easy to find individual issues. Over the past 5 years, many complete years of 12 issues have sold at auction for $20 to $50 per year for the 1940s and 1950s. Some Fred Bear covers have gone super high.

1937-1951 "American Bowman Review" Single issues turn up monthly at auction. Complete years surface from time to time. Lots of issues have surfaced in the past two years. Still difficult to locate every issue to make a complete set, but worth the effort for the serious collector.

I have complete sets of all the archery magazines printed from 1919 to 1985 bound into books to keep them from getting misplaced or damaged. The bound books also make it easier to locate and mark specific articles. (I mis-stated that, there is still one single issue of one magazine that is missing)…

Here is a list of “Archery” showing each month printed from 1944-1969. You should start a thread titled…

Collecting the NFAA “Archery” Magazine

Just copy/paste the years below that you want to collect and state that you are looking for these individual issues of “Archery”.

As you acquire individual issues, edit the thread and remove the months that you pick up. If you track your collection in this manner, you will keep everyone updated as to what you still need…

You may be surprised at how fast your collection and knowledge grows... Good luck with your magazine collecting.
