Cody,
Hunting Africa had always been a dream of mine and I read everything I could find about it. The name Elgin Gates was always front and center in my readings.
(By the way, I did realize my dream with a 3 week hunt to South Africa in 2006.)
As far as I am concerned, he is the greatest sporting hunter of the 20th Century. Gates hunted Africa for nearly 30 years with many of his hunts being expeditions into unknown territory. He is pretty much responsible for the opening of much of Africa to sport hunting. He has well over 200 trophies from Africa, Asia, and North America in the record books.
He is somewhat of a controversial figure due to the rumors surrounding his quest to get as many game animals into the record books as possible. Some say he did not adhere strictly to fair chase rules, but this has not been proven. It could be others were just jealous of his success.
Elgin also raced motor boats winning several national championships and set 26 world records.
He won 17 national and international championships in clay target shooting. Won 3 International Olympic-style championships in 8 years, defeating every member fo the elite and highly trained military teams from the U.S. Army, Air Force, Marines, and Navy. He was the only civilian to ever do so.
He died in 1988.
His favorite cartridge was the .300 Weatherby Magnum and I do recall very little about his hunting with trad bows. If you have something, I would love to read about it.
