59 Kodiak Fan club. Help please.
« on: February 26, 2009, 03:22:00 PM »
Don't know if this is the correct place for this request, but I know there is the most knowledgeable people here on this board.
Bought a 59  47# 64" beauty and am having a dickens of a time getting it to not take my arm off with handshock.  I've tried every brace height between 7 1/4 to 8 1/2 in 1/8 increments and it still rattles my cage.  Made a 14 strand dacron and played some more.  The Bow actually shoots beautifully, where you look, and the 64" allows me to pull my 30 1/2 draw with ease and no stack. Am shooting 11/32 and 23/64 cedars in the 600 the 625 gr. range.  Even tried some ash that are almost 800 gr. and that didn't get rid of it.  Am I overlooking something?  I love this long awaited prize, but am running out of ibuprofen.  Thanks  Bill   :help:

Well if it makes you feel any better-that is remarkable.........with the 600 grain arrows and brace over 7.5" in should be really well mannered.
Are you gripping it at all?
I use very little pressure on mine. How loud is it?

Make sure you put a nock on the arrow before you shoot it.

Make sure your arm is fastened into your shoulder.

I will trade you the bow's weight in Ibuprofen.

Bjorn, Yeah the grip thing came to mind at the range today and I remembered lessons learned about gripping my longbows.  I'm used to holding a high wrist riser on my widow and letting the palm swell take some pressure.  It felt better letting the meat of the thumb take the pressure and no pressure on the palm.  The bow is not noisy at all. I just made a string for it and even with a lot of wax on it the noise is not bad.  Am planning on padding the string anyway, and have installed beaver balls.
I didn't want to cause a furer and this is in no way a shot at 59ers just want to get the most out of this classic......
And Tony I appreciate the offer but I already have a four year contract with Phizer corp.

No problem Bill-the 1959K owners know how quiet and well mannered these bows are, and we are here to make sure your experience is a good one.
There is a prominent Bear collector in Anchorage by the name of Chuck who posts on here; his handle is 'alaskabowhunter' and his personal bow is a 1959 Kodiak-shoot him a PM, I'm sure he would be happy to hear from you.

I'm shooting my 64"er at 30" and love it.

If yours is really rattling your cage that badly there may be a problem with the bow (tiller off etc)...
uh... send it to me for a full evaluation  :D

I met Chuck at the Alaska Bowhunters banquet, In fact messing around with his 59 at that show is what pushed me over the edge,,I knew I had to get one.  I'll PM him but I believe he is out of state.
Jeremy, sometimes a cage rattling is a good thing, clears the cobwebs.  Thanks guys for the responses.  Just wanted to see if there was anything I had overlooked before I put limbsavers on .......Just kidding.

Rather ironic when you think about it. If Bill had suggested sticking LS's on a new bow no eyebrows would have moved a bit-put them on a 50 year old recurve and jaws drop all over the Internet!

Don
I twisted up a 14 strand and wrapped the loops with wool.  The bow is really quiet so no problem there.  Was thinking of trying a 12 strand and adding 4 strands to the loops.
It was my thinking that the tips need protecting,(original overlays), but the thinner main string will reduce the shock.  We'll see what happens.
man the limbsavers joke really caught on.  I love it.
Have just about come to the conclusion that this handshock thing is mostly operator error.  Will change up my grip and play around with that also.  Thanks for all the support, any and all ideas welcome. (boy did I open myself up)

Hey Bill, I have a few '59 Kodiaks at the house that are shooters. We can meet sometime and do a little comparison shooting to see if there is any difference. Let me know where you want to meet for a test drive. I will be in Anchorage next weekend with no plans at this time.
I was born with nothing and I still have most of it left.

Bill one other thought would be the type bow you were shooting before the 1959.In comparision to lets say a black widow ? yes they do have some hand shock.
I use 12-14 or 16 strand flemish pending on draw weight with no padding.bd

Chuck,
Thanks for the invite and yes I'd like to get together and shoot.  I've been going to Rabbit creek almost daily either to shoot or certify students.  Hardly anybody there.  Gotta go to the gunshow in Palmer on Saturday but Sunday is open.  It even looks like the weather might cooperate.  I need your phone # so I can bug you.
