Ben Pearson: what kind of finish did they use?
« on: March 11, 2009, 07:43:00 AM »
Question out of the blue: what kind of finish did Pearson use? I'm cleaning up an old Pearson and I noticed that the finish got slightly tacky when wiped with rubbing alcohol.

I'm looking at a 1961 bow.

the finish has bubble in certain spots. the plan is to sand those areas smooth and apply a few coats of poly over the whole bow.

stripping off the entire finish would take 20 grit sandpaper and explosives, I think.

Just never had a finish get tacky before...odd.

sorry, need to clarify: the finish got tacky when the rubbing aclohol hit it..then when it dried the finish was back to normal.

I just completed a refinishing job on a 1962 pearson and I ended up stripping the entire bow.  The finish had turned a funky yellowish color so I took it all off.  A cabinet scraper and some 180 grit did the job.

My first post:
I recently inheirited my Dad's Ben Pearson Palomino.  Can anyone guide me to a forum where I might learn more about it?

I know for certain that is has to be pre 1961 because he brought it with him from Wyoming when we moved to Alaska.  I'm almost sure the bow hasn't been strung in the 48 years since then.  I would like to find out what I can before I mess with it.

Tenspot, please post some photos so we can see it.  Rich and a few other of us regulars here should be able to help you.

Seems fairly "plain" compared to some I've seen; is that bad?

My Dad brought it with him when we moved to Alaska in '61 so it's at least that old.  Some conflict in Archery Archives; they say the '59 was 5'9" (like this) but with green glass.  Then they say the '60 was 5'8" with white glass.  Could this be a "tweener"?

I doubt this will shed any light but I have the original sales tag from the bow (Dad never threw away ANYTHING!)

Here's the tag....

Do you think there will be any issues with stringing this after nearly 50 years storage?  It was warm and dry and I cannot see any problems with the lams......

And lol @ MW!  You guys be gentle with me, I know NOTHING!  But I', looking forward to learning everything.  The only thing I know this bow ever killed was an 8 foot rattler that came out of a bale at the range.  I need her to drop a bullwinkle for me.
