Bow tip repair?

I have a Ben Pearson BP-30 that needs the tip overlays replaced. I had a string break and part of overlay was sheared off. I was thinking of replacing the overlays with phenolic. My question is where do I get the phenolic so I can attempt the repair?

Thanks bowdoc. Micarta is what I was thinking but had a brain fart and typed phenolic. For some reason I didn't think 3rivers pieces were that long. I need 1x2 inch pieces so they should work.

Isn’t Micarta a trademark of a laminate we call phenolic ?

Actually I am not shur if my statement is correct or not. Someone might know. BTW, you might already have, but check out «Restoration 101 on 1959 Kodiaks». The best thread ever IMO.

yes I believe it is Simon I actually think they are both the same thing.3rivers catalog says phenolic tip overlays two pieces 3/16 black and two pieces 1/16 in red.All conveniently cut to 1 1/2" x 1 3/4 so they may be to small.The other place would be bingham supply or old master crafter.They have it in any length or thickness.bowdoc

Is there a benefit in using Micarta instead of Fiberglass for the overlays?

The micarta is just a little more flexable then fiberglass.I personaly like the fiberglass better.Only because I been using it for a long time with good luck.When I make overlays I only glue down one layer of glass at a time so there is really no issue with the flexablity.3-4 layers of glass are pretty stiff to bend to the contour of the end of your bow.bowdoc

Thanks again Bowdoc. I was originally going to use wood, but I quickly realized that flexibility was going to be an issue.

I was wondering about the relationship between phenolic and micarta and decided to google it.

The best overall descriptor seems to be bakelite, which is synonymous with phenolic. Micarta is a brand name for them.

How did we ever know things before internet?

Yes, "Micarta" is a brand name and interchangeable for linen phenolic. This material is stable (low expansion) and strong (in all planes) being made from many thin layers of woven linen cloth joined together with phenolic resin. Black colored Micarta was used extensively in 1967-1974 era bows like the Bear Super Kodiaks, Super-48's and Tamerlane, Shakespeare Cascade, Wing P-II, Slim Line and Thunderbird, Blackhawk and others. Wilson Bros used white micarta on their fine target bows. Linen phenolic is manufactured in a wide range of colors.
