Did '59 Kodiaks have a compass option?
« on: July 26, 2009, 11:43:00 PM »
Just curious if the '59 Kodiaks could be ordered with a compass as an option? I'm shooting my "new" one I got last week alot and it is getting easier to stack the arrows consistently in the vitals of my 3D animals. It does have alot of hand shock and vibration which I am guessing is par for the bow? It is 64", 57lbs and shooting 500 gr arrows

Hi Bryce you don't see lots of them around but there are some bows out there with factory installed compass.I've seen them from 1954 of which it was standard on all Kodiaks that year on up to a 1967 1/2 Super Kodiak with one..bd

Doc - I have a 53 Kodiak with a factory installed compass too. Also have seen one other from the same year. Both are installed in the center of the leather grip like a 54 Kodiak.

Perhaps a 600 gr arrow may make some of that shock go away?

I have a 64" in 55# and it is free of handshock with a 520 gr. arrow (and no compass).

Maybe some tinkering with the brace height since yours may be set too low.  I have good results at about 8.5".

Bryce - Missed posting earlier that Floyd Eccleston's favorite bow was a 56" 1959 Kodiak and it has a factory installed compass. I posted a photograph of it on a thread this spring. I think it was the one John started about putting a compass in his maple sight window. I'll see if I can find the thread.

Just found it so copied the link to the photograph of Floyd's 56" 1959 Kodiak with the compass. Floyd's compass in the grip like the 1954 compass Kodiaks, Fred put his compass low in the riser. There are photographs of Fred's 59 on one of these threads...

Bryce - I don't know if Floyd ordered this bow with the compass or if Fred just put it the bow for Floyd because he thought it should be there. You need to remember that Fred and Floyd were fiends since 1940 and Floyd was Bear's first dealer in Michigan. Fred did a lot of things for Floyd that were a total surprise to Floyd. One example that comes to mind is when Fred introduced the Signature Bow, he just sent one to Floyd - free of charge... If I remember correctly, it matched the serial number of Floyd's A handle. To really appreciate the story you had to hear Floyd tell it as he was really humbled by Fred's generous gesture.

If I had a compass, it would be in my favorite 59.  No doubt in my mind.

Trap -

If I send you this compass, so you have one, will you put it in your favorite 59 Kodiak ???

Trap - Just measured the compass. You could break the green plastic off of it, which would leave a 1-3/4" round piece. The hole would only have to be about 1/4" deep.

Blackhawk,
I'll crank up my brace height and see how that does. Raghorn, I apprecaite your comments about going with a heavier arrow and may end up doing so but think first I 'll see how my trajectory is at 30 yds with that heavy of arrow. Thanks for all the information about the compass's, It's neat hearing about the history.
