Cody,

This is a Howard Hill recurve. If it wasn't for "Howard Hill" on the belly, it probably wouldn't attract much attention from most bowmen. It is pretty plain looking with a sleek riser and no overlays, green back, white belly, and two bamboo laminations. It's been many years since I shot this bow but later today will take her out on the course and let you know how she shoots. That E. Bud feather rest may have to go...

Cody -

Just put 20 arrows through the Howard Hill recurve. It shoots a lot like a 64" 1957 or 1958 Bear Kodiak Special. Actually, when the bows are strung, they are pretty similar in shape and their physical weight is about the same.

Shooting wise you would be better off with a 64" 1959 or 1960 Kodiak Special. They are pretty common bows and are usually fairly reasonable.

I don't believe the Howard Hill recurve can compare on any level with the 1959 or 1960 Kodiaks. I can tell you with certainty that I'm not going to sell any of my 59 or 60s to buy Howard Hill recurves.

Yes, just checked the listing you mentioned. That Howard Hill recurve is a little different. It has white glass on the back and belly and looks like it has a partially missing water transfer decal that is less then the width of the limb.

It also looks like the one in the auction has more of a pistol grip and an indentation on the back, about a hand's width below the shelf. Sort of like a 1961 Kodiak Special.

Wade and Bowdoc, didn't Pearson make some of the HH bows? I'm pretty sure that at some point Owen Jeffery had a hand in building some bows for HHA but I don't recall who he was affiliated with at the time; maybe Hoyt. Shoot. I may be mistaken anyway. Damned old age...where are my reading glasses, I just had them.....

Grant - I've written quite bit about other companies who made archery equipment as agents for Howard Hill in the 1930s and 1940s.

After the early 1950s, I really don't know much about who manufactured Howard Hill's tackle. I just happen to have one, I really don't collect Howard Hill recurves so never had a reason to research them.

It is actually kind of interesting that we have two bows so far, they are marked differently and were obviously made on slightly different forms.

"Howard [Hill] actually represented BP inc from 54-57 – when some HH line of equipment was made/marketed by BP inc – also they must have known each other dating to/before the early 40’s –HH endorsed some BP product in the 1942? Catalog."  Ben Pearson, Jr. in a email

I have somewhere that Hill [If I remember correctly] was paid $1000 per year to represent Pearson products during the time he did so.  Just can't put my hand on it at the moment.

I owned a 70# HH Recurve for awhile.  It shot pretty dang hard, but I couldn't handle the weight and sold it.

I remember shooting with a man in 1975 that had a Hill recurve. It was bamboo with white glass on back and belly. I just can not remember if he said it was newer or older. It sure spit out his #12 Micro-flite arrows.
Maybe Craig at HH can help.

Not for sure on the exact, but Ben "Red" Stuart of Pennsylvania, shoot a H.H. Recurve? A picture of him in the old Traditional Archery magazine with a groundhog and that Bow!
