Color match for K. Mag grey paint
« on: August 12, 2009, 11:28:00 PM »
I have what I think is an early 70's Kodiak Magnum, KU52613, that looks from a overpaint spot on one of the tips like the front and back glass was painted smoke grey at the factory.  I'm repairing a couple of blemishes, stress cracks, and one drill hole in the glass per BD's 101 thread.  Has anyone done a color match for this grey paint? or know a good paint that's close? It has some horizontal crackling on the back of the bow just past the fadeouts and I know that's just finish and was planning on sanding those out but if the grey is a paint I'm not sure I want to mess with it and have matching issues.

If you want to go to your local art store they should carry dry artist pegment. You can mix the black and white with your epoxy until you get the color you want.If the bow is painted from the factory you could remove all the old original paint and start fresh ??????? bd

Thanks for the replies.  I've been reading all the entries I can find here using search but hadn't seen any mention of painted glass.  The finish overall is pretty good and I was hoping just to repair the problems I listed without a complete refinish.  I may have to redo the back since the crackling covers a large area but I was hoping to sand carefully and only take off the finish.  If I mix paint and epoxy for the hole plug does it need to be enamel based or latex?  Also, what's the best method for removing the stabilizer bushing?  Heating and pliers?

The stress cracks and scratches have been filled with Loctite already.

OH yeah the old factory paint job and I would be willing to bet if you are a betting man that your bow is actually a 1970-or 1971 and color and made to look like a 1972 as I see from the pics the silk screens are on the belly of the bow.If you remove the old finish gently there is a chance the original silk screens are still on the back of the bow as well.Keep us posted bd

To be honest those were the listing photos so I have no idea, but I made sure to copy them to my hard drive.  I'll see if I can find out.
