refinish question

I have a 1962 Kodiak Special on the way. I may try my hand at refinishing it.
What do I need in the way of finish and sandpaper? I am a dunce when it comes to woodwork and such but cannot hurt to try. Will probably only do the riser.

Be sure to take and post lots of "Before" photos, too! That will go a long way towards inspiring the rest of us.
