Looking for a Broken Bear Coin Riser
« on: August 30, 2009, 04:08:00 PM »
I thought it might be cool to make a Bear coin knife...maybe for St Judes Auction next year.  Might look something like this with the coin in the butt of the handle kinda where the Osage knot is.  If anyone has one with some nice wood give me a howler.  I'd certainly buy it at a reasonable cost.  I guess I could always just pick up a coin...but might just be fun to have it all authentic.  Any ideas appreciated. Thanks...tippit

Seboomook, Your right that was exactly what I wanted...my bad I checked back too late.  If ya'll find anything else like that, let me know.  The copper coin & rosewood would make a nice knife for a collector or a Bear bow fancier.  Seems like I have to come up with new ideas each year for St Judes...although it's a fun passion  :)   Thanks...tippit

Bowdoc may have something laying around when he gets back too. Good Luck, it's a great project,
and I know I'll bid on it.

I was going to really pester him and have him finish the handle like one of his bows plus have Shell come up with some kinda special Bear sheath.  Maybe just a pipe dream...tippit

Kurt,
This has grown over night.  I want to make sure I have a real special riser for next years St Judes Auction.

Shell just emailed me this:

"I have had previously drawn some figures and found in old primitive quillwork of bear tracks as well as archery related symbols, I will do this one in quillwork on this upcoming sheath, I wanted to quill something so bad this years auction but this must have been meant for this project for next year as it was making me worry that it could be outdone, but it is it's own. Incorporating the historic with the historic finds my mind wallowing in all kinds of excitement!

I will be blending them together and the sheath will be fully quilled in various forms of techniques. You let me know what size knife you want to do and any size if just fine!

So looking forward to another with you!

Shell"

She also mentioned that she not only has black bear fur but some Silver Grizzly too!  The is one thing but Shell's sheaths are artwork that few others can reproduce!!

This maybe opening a can of worms...but what do you collectors value the most in a coin Bear bow.  Thanks for all your help here...Doc

Doc
How about using the slabs of Kennys KSD bubinga and rosewood evenly, with the laminated strip down the middle. Then rerouting for the coin dividing the lam near the butt.
Or maybe capping the butt with antler base, with the coin in the center.
Shells sheath sounds awesome too!
