A few years ago my wife found a record, which i believe came out in the 60s. Its with Mr. Bear and Curt Gowdy. Secrets of hunting. anybody know much about it. curious how many made, and i never listen to it yet. Any one have any info. Thx CWarberg

I found this info somewhere on the internet:

"This limited edition LP record album was first made available in 1968, but not officially listed in the catalog until 1969. Recorded with Curt Gowdy of Sportscaster fame, Fred relates many stories of his hunts and tips for success. Sold for $1.00 in the catalog, this item only lasted until 1970, when it was discontinued. During this time over 60,000 records were sold. Prices for this album have soared recently, as I have seen auctions bringing up to $30-50 each for a good copy.

Note - Is $50 realistic for an item with relatively large production runs? In my opinion, this item has gotten out of control and needs to come back to earth in value.

In 1983 Bear re-introduced the "Secrets of Hunting" as a cassette. This version lasted through 1986. I have not seen a cassette sell or trade on the secondary market lately, so value is really undetermined, but as I said before if it says Bear Archery on it be sure that someone, somewhere wants it bad."

I have one...got it around '68 or '69. It is in good shape. I have not listened to it in years as I no longer have a turn table.

I can't believe you have had yours for two years and have not yet listened to it. It is a great record, just to hear Fred Bears voice in the telling of his stories and hunting secrets. Many of his secrets are no longer secrets, just common place hunting tactics today. Some hav eproven to be wrong over the years.

As far as the value of th record goes, they are worth what someone will pay for them. It is a collectible item of Bear memorabilia.

If 60,000 were release in the late '60's, where are they. Many are in the possession of people who would not think of letting them go. When one comes available, you had best jump on it and pay the price if you want one.

Old stuff like that may be considered obsolete. However, obsolete items are either worth nothing is there is no need for them, but if you really need or want them, they are priceless.

Sad to say i was reminded its been 5yrs I have had the album, on the front of the cover were Fred Signed ' Good Hunting ' Fred Bear. It says " 3.95 limited edition value" but the price for the record was One Dollar. Wow. The record appears to not even been listen to. Your right Papalapin, I should fire up the Turn Table and check it out, Also what year is the Super Kodiak on the front. I cant tell. Thanks again guys..CWarberg

Also Mr Papapalin, does your LP have two, four digit numbers on the top right front corner? mine is 863B-2000, curious if they are the same, or mean anything?

Here is one in dead mint condition still in the original Bear Shipping Box with Bear Shipping Label addressed to "Mr. Nels Grumley"... postmarked June 13, 1968...

Thinking of having a DNA test run to see of Fred Bear licked the mailing label...

Warberg, Also have a second one that does not have the original shipping box. Both have the same 863B-2000 number above the R in Bear. That number is likely the jacket number rather than a unique serial number for each record.

Ah...brings back memories.

There was an even better event that is probably lost to history. Somewhere around '63 or '64 give or take a year, Papa Bear went on a safari to Africa. He brought along Arthor Godfrey who at the time had one of the top national radio programs. Once a day wwhile in Africa, The Arthor Godfrey Show was broadcast from their Safari Camp. As I recall, it was for about two weeks.

As teenagers bitten bad with the bowhunting bug, we were glued to the radio every day at the prescribed time.

I'm sure the radio netwrok has that taped and sitting in there archives gathering dust. If someone ever got hold of that tape and made CD's, they would make a pretty penny.

OK all you "Old Fart's", how amny of you remember the Arther Godfrey Show being brodcast from the bush in Africa, reporting the daily adventures of Papa Bear on his African Safarii?
