Got a 66 griz
« on: May 27, 2010, 03:55:00 PM »
I just picked up a 1966 lh grizzly.  58" and 62#.  The bow is beautiful.  Perfect condition except for one thing.  It has a vertical crack in the fiberglass in front of the shelf.  You can catch it with your fingernail.  I wonder if I should just drop a few drops of superglue in there to keep it from getting worse?  Or maybe sand it down so that it won't snag anything?  Anyway, I was happy to find one of the oldies in a heavier poundage.

I had an almost identical crack on an old palomino.  I'd bet money that it isn't just cracked on the front but continues down the transition of the shelf and riser.  You'll have to take the rug off to check it.  I got some locktite 420 per bodoc and shot it until it flowed out of the crack, let sit and put some more in til it filled the crack completely level.  Sanded clean and the bow has shot without issue for more than 8 months now.  Don't know about the heavier weight bow but the loctite is amazing stuff and should do the trick.  JMHO

Thanks.  I'll start by checking the shelf.

Guess I got lucky.  Maybe just squirt some loc-tite in there, once I can find it.

It looks like just a crack in the green glass.  I'd fill it with Loctite and light clamping and you should be good to go. I have a '66 Griz also. They are pretty bows.

Thanks reddogge,
I put some loctite(the cheap thin stuff from Lowe's) in the crack and wrapped it with surgical tubing. I didn't have the patience to wait for the loctite 420.  I used a syringe and needle, and it seemed to flow into the gap.   The crack was at a bad place and I couldn't get much compression.  I filled it a few times and I think the gap is completely filled at the top.  I think the vertical crack is filled as well. It wasn't as neat as I would like, and doesn't look like a bowdoc repair.  But I think that it is pretty solid.  Gonna try to find some very mile abrasive to even out the small glue spot the ended up at the crack.  Just waiting on my strings from Josh(OliverStacy) and some rest material from Jeremy.

The grip on this griz is awesome.  I far prefer it to the kodiak grip.  I put a 450+ string on it that had very padded loops just to brace the bow and draw it back without shooting it.  I draw it around 30" without much stack or finger pinch.  Really a sweet bow.

You get such nice bows that I can never shoot. And I see that you are still prowling around the classifieds. You are one sick puppy.

Happy shooting!

Thanks, Kathy.  I'm really looking forward to getting this bow shooting.  If I still have this bow in 2016, I'd like to feed it a deer for it's 50th birthday.

pdk, do you still have it?

That's some fantastic wood in that bow!
