A Set of Bowhorses

Here are some pictures of the Bowhorse’s I made last week for the upcoming bow building season.  One has the first coat of polyurethane and the other one still needs final sanding and a couple of bolts before being sealed and finished.  I was waiting until the seat I got from Mark Baker was fitted to the Bowhorse before sealing it.  Both were made entirely from reclaimed timbers left over from different projects, except two of the legs on the unfinished one, which were reclaimed from an old deck.  After the finish is applied leather will be added to the deadheads and upper timber for gripping the stave better and to protect it.

I saw these on a thread on PA I had going about bow horses and I also thought the use of the tractor seat was real neat, Tom. Great looking, STURDY "work horses" IMO, Walt.

Did as search on Goggle and found ten different designs, took the three I liked the most and designed these using the combination of the features that looked best.  I didn’t use any plans and made them to fit the  timbers I had in the garage.  I built the first one and couldn’t find any way to improve it so I built the second one the same.  I am sure after they get used use by others there will be some feedback and improvements.  

 The tractor seat isn’t my idea, I saw it on a thread somewhere about ten years back and figured to try it if I could find one.  While visiting with Mark Baker on Saturday I asked him to keep an eye out for one and got lucky, he had found three while hunting this past fall and the landowner let him have them.

You can have the one without the tractor seat, but have to drive up and visit for a day or so to get it.  But before you take it we are going to make sure you know how to use properly, which means you will have to work your own stave (provided by me) into a bow.  I centered the deadhead on that one so it to works from either side.  Being left handed I  made the one with the tractor seat with the deadhead on the right, which allows me to put the staves on the left side, making it easier to work.

Those look fantastic.  I love the reclaimed wood.  My kinda project!  The tractor seat is a great idea.  

Looks like you have inspired me to move that project up on the "to-do" list.
