Bear TD screws
« on: January 07, 2011, 05:19:00 PM »
The screws (in the limb pockets-that fit in the small hole in the limb) on my Mag riser have a different OD than the ones on my newer wood riser (and, thus, don't fit well with the newer limbs). Does anyone know if I can get some replacement screws at a hardware store? Or are they pretty specialized screws?

Thanks

Cooper

It's just a locator pin...take 'em out.  The clamp will hold it in position.

What Papalapin said, I took those silly screws out of my Mag handle and my (90's) wood handle. I had issues with new Bear limbs on both handles. That was a few years ago that I took out the screws and have had no issues.

one other thought and not to say this is true on every set of limbs. But the locater screw is also kind of a depth gage to set how far the limbs fit into the sockets. Some sets of limbs have a longer channel then others and will slip a bit deeper into the sockets if the locater screws are NOT there bd

I had the same problem. I recently picked up an A mag riser, Got 2 different sets of limbs both of the gainesville era, the newer set has brass inserts in the limb holes and is smaller than the limbs without. I just found a couple allen head screws reduced the head size with a file and now I can just swap the locator screws with the limbs of my choice.

it seems there is about .006 difference in the screws. My thought would be to change the screws rather then drilling out the limbs.Heck it only takes a minute to change the screws which would be better them removing them and leaving them out(just in case).I've seen several sets of limbs reamed out with what looked like someone used a pocket knife........yuke looking bd

Yeah, doc, I found a problem on one of my mag risers recently.  Had never put a set of limbs on it in the 8 or 10 years since I got it. It had been refinished when I got it-nice enough krackel finish job, but he got too much paint in one socket and the limb wouldn't seat over that locator screw. It doesn't take much to keep the limb from seating.  Turned out one of the limb bracket screw holes was also stripped out on that end as well...and that screw won't hold under pressure.  I'm guessing someone torqued it while forcing a limb into that end and the threads gave way.....so they sold it to me!  Wondering the best way to repair the threads in that magnesium.  I can get small brass inserts but will never find a blued, pan head screw that will look original and fit those threads.  So, how about filling the stripped hole with JB Weld and retapping it?   Do you know the spec on those original screws?  And who might have a couple?

oldbohntr,
Are you needing to know the thread size on the latches to the riser? Below are some sizes.
Latches with the little bears to the riser. 4-40
Latches without bears. 6-32
Limb locator pin 8-36 NOT 8-32 as some think!
Sideplate screws 2-56
I could fix your handle by putting and insert in it but I would need the riser to do so. You could just sell it to me if it is an A riser. LOL
