"Pictures added" Unmarked Bear Kodiak Hunter
« on: January 27, 2011, 07:32:00 PM »
Hello all
I bought what I believe is a 67,68 or 69 Kodiak Hunter.  I can not find any markings anywhere on this bow.  The bow does appear to have had the bear coin removed.
It is LH
60"
62#
There does appear to be flaws in the glass, and the limbs do not appear to have been finished. the wood does have finish on it. At one time someone camo- painted the bow and then removed the camo, however some of the camo paint is still on the bow and is on top of the finish protecting the wood.
The person I bought it from stated they bought it at an Estate sale in Grayling, mi.  I wonder if the bow was rejected because of the glass before it got completed and found its way home as someones user?
I want to clean it up; The question is how far should I go?? Do I just clean it up and apply new finish; or do I finish it off with decals, coin and everything except serial number???
How do I ad pictures???

Obviously, it needs a finish to protect the wood and the laminations.  How far you want to go with it is up to you.  But if everything else is good (no delaminations, tips are fine, etc.) you will be amazed at how nice it will look if you take it all the way down to bare wood and do a complete refinish.

Sounds to me like it could have been a factory camo bow that someone removed the camo from. Thus no markings.

It is not a 67 since they were 58". the 1968 was shedua and the 1969 was tigerwood.

Thanks kuch for the advice
here are pics,(if all goes well)

Horney Toad, wht kind of wood are we looking at?
Whip; everything is good shape.  No delam, no cracks or splits.  I have strung it up and it shoots great.
Jack;  you could be right. curiousity, I don't know if the photo shows it well enough, but the wood & glass has a finish on it under the paint.  when they were applying factory camo, did they put finish on the bow before the paint?  plus there is camo paint on top of the glue where the coin is missing.

Jack,
Thanks for the help.
From the sounds of it, the Serial # went with the camo paint.  Now time to see about getting her cleaned up.

I removed the factory camo on one of my k-mags and it had all the silk screens as well as a completely different serial number under the od green paint.

They came eather way clear finish under camo was(sometimes) a dealer would order a bow certin length and or draw weight whatever but needed it in camo.Bear workers got a bow out of stock and would do a light wet sanding spray camo right over the original clear finish.Sometimes now I say sometimes not always the case there was no camo paint in coin hole of those bows.Other cases were sometimes the bow would have maybe a small cosmetic flaw some of those bows also ended up camo(paint in hole sometimes but not always 50/50).However all the camo bows with camo paint in the coin hole were NOT blems and or rejects or any other problemos......pretty weird huh ? bd

sounds like the factory policy was to use whatever bow was available which met the specs to fill an order.
bowdoc:
you can bet I am rewatching and reading you tutorial "101 bow restoration" post. Any advice on where I can obtain silk screens and coin?

And the wierd thing is I removed the touched up factory camo from a '69 Kodiak and there were no silkscreens under the paint, rather green ones on top of the paint and it is a perfect bow in every detail, not one mark or stress line.

The 1968 had green glass and the 1969 had gray glass. Your bow looks like gray glass correct?

The wood looks more like shedua to me, since there is not much figure, however could be some tigerwood without much figure.
