Hunting with Collectable Broadheads
« on: March 13, 2011, 02:06:00 PM »
If a repeat....point me at the thread? I'm not finding one in searches. Some listed in the thread on hunting with collectable equipment but seems more focused on bows, naturally.

But......recalling I am NOT a broadhead "collector" and just like hunting with "old stuff" I've been looking at old heads.

I mentioned before the 52 year as my birth year and Raghorn quickly told me the amount of heads available that year is quite LARGE.......thanks for that.

So.........

WHO IS or HAS hunting/hunted with "collectable" heads, not the now produced versions, but the originals.

MINT, unused ones of course should stay that way IMHO but wondering who has used what and would/will again.

IMHO, they all "work" but curious.

Always learning from you guys on this stuff and see heads I'd love to fling at a critter for "old times sake".

The early Ace heads, some of the Pearsons hold my interest now but......I know there are tons out there that will as well.

1952 and earlier, non barbed (rats) due to IN regs. Lots hunting with Deadheads (me too) but looking for earlier.

Surely a few of you have done so as well.

Photos PLEASE? of ones you have used? (Ignornant of many)

Special "points" for critter photos      :D

Again, if a repeat....I need the thread and accept my apologies.

Us (old) newbie "head hunters" have to be a PIA to you all.

God Bless

I have hunted with Zwickey Eskimos - still in production and introduced around 1968 (and the 1947 Zwickey is very close in shape).  The Zwickey Delta, also still produced, is from 1959.  The Ace Standard, another still available, is another 1959 head.

I know several guys who shoot only Bear Razorheads and "collectable" (as you say) Bears cost about the same as modern heads.  They're all collectable - new and old.  ;-)

Ben Pearson Deadheads have a loyal following - heck, even at $12 a pop on the bay auction they're a LOT cheaper than Abowyer heads. Interestingly, they game out near the top in Dr. Ashby's tests.

True....still available, thanks for those, but identifiably "different" in most cases.

Ive hunted with Zwickie, Bears, Deadheads and all great heads and will use again.

Just interest in heads pre early 50s, originals, that some may hunt with.....if there is any chance of there being many doing so.

Some think that shouldn't happen, and again, agree if mint, but some are found already used and those are which I would like to try but unsure as yet as to versions so simply asking "who has used what" from that time frame.

Thanks, Stump!

I would think you'd have to be prepard to loose the head if the deer ran off with it and you couldn't find the arrow. It happens.

OH yeah.........true. As I said, lots wouldnt and I wouldnt want a 50 dollar head on one.......normally, lol.

Shot silver flames one year......about same thing, just less emotion.

For me, it's what they were meant for, no offense. Rolling the dice using them, for sure is risky.

To me, it's not much differnent than shooting a collectable Bear bow.  You just dont know what will happen.

Several heads around not more than the SF or nice Deadheads, some much less.

Doesn't seem to be many (yet) that have done so.
Thanks anyway

In our Wyoming camp over the past 30 odd years we have used dozens of different vintage heads for testing on deer and antelope carcasses.

After consuming the proper amount of aiming fluid in the evenings around camp fire, we have conducted our non-scientific penetration tests with dozens of vintage heads such as Geronimos, Mohawks, Ropers, Rippers, Case, Bowfin, G.J. Dye, Browning Serpentine, Fang, Gus Adkins, etc. These are always educational endeavors.

For hunting, depending on the animal and terrain, I use either vintage Zwickeys or Vintage Bear Razorheads.

For Bear Razorheads, I use is the collectible 1955 Pinned Bear Insert.

Let me know when you lose one and I'll quit my job and shag my metal detector out to that area.     :biglaugh:

It's interesting that, for the most part, the lousiest designs are the ones with collector value (Bear pinned & St. Charles notible exceptions) because hunters didn't use them and they died out.  I see a LOT of potential for future generations of collectors of the screw-in designs.  Some of those are the worst ever.    :D

I use deadheads every year or so with my hill bow, now down to my last 3. I have been checking blahbay and the price of deadheads has gotten crazy, averaging about 20 a pop. Gotta start checking more garage sales and flea markets.......

I exclusively use the old Bear razorheads.  I did receive an old Ben Pearson Switchblade from a friend awhile back.....looks very similar to the Bear....and might give it a try this year.

I got to digging in my boxes and found some heads from the late 40's. I have several extras to trade if someone would like to give them a try this season. They are tarnished and have some surface rust but with a steel brush and a coat of paint you'll be good to go.

Ivanhoe broadheads (1948), they weigh in at 140gr, 2 1/2"L, 1 1/8"W

A friend of mine bought the remaining inventory of an old archery shop that was closing it' s doors. He ended up with a hundred of Black Copperhead Slicers, that he was selling in the early '90s for a buck a piece I bought two dozen and hunted with them for several years and kiled at least 10 deer with them. They worked great as long as you kept them away from the shoulder.
