NEW TOPIC....(not bear related)
« on: November 07, 2011, 01:16:00 PM »
Seems like 90% of the action is something bear related.

So does anyone want to talk something about pearson, browning, wing, etc.

Anyone still shoot/hunt with a pearson signature takedown?

i read someone say they ben pearson and fred bear had good production standards. They didnt get too extreme with their bow designs which made them consistant shooters. My first bow was a Ben pearson couger and i think it has a smooth draw and shots fast.It also has a nice grip.I wasnt impressed with fred bear bows until i tried a super kodiak.I have never shot a pearson signature takedown but i imagine its just as good.I think ill try to find one and try it out.Good post and thanks for saying what you mean.

Your right!

The bow makers you mention made some beautiful bows for sure.
I'm particularly fond of vintage-damon howatt bows and wing archery.
If you search TG you will see that many of the other makers are hot topics here as well.

Fred Bear was way ahead of his time and captured the spirit of bowhunting on his films.

We viewers saw him hunting with his Bear bows.
"Kodiaks" for the most part. We watched him hunt in all kinds of terain, weather, ect...
even using his bow as a wading stick crossing river's!

I think "Fred Bear the man" is the reason why most people lean toward collecting Bear Bows.
His bows are a link to Him. The Restless Spirit.

I own or have owned and shot the following brands other than Bear. Tice and Watts, Browning, Damon Howatt, Hoyt, Shakespeare, Root. All of the above brands have excellent shooting bows in their line up from the 60s-70s. My favorites perhaps are Howatt bows from the 60s to early 70s.

I have several Pearsons, Wings and a Howatt. All are great shooters. Currently these are my two go to Bows,     They are a Pearson Mercury Marauder TD (top) and a Wing Thunderbird. Both are great shooters. I'm shooting the T-bird the most and this is the first season for it.       It's 56#@28" and is very smooth to my 29 1/4" draw. My Marauder I hunted with last year and some this spring and I've shot numerous animals with it including a bear and whitetail. It is silky smooth and both bows are fast and flat shooting.

Thanks to Bowdoc I got started refinishing a few bows. I really like the looks of black Micarta and the old Wing Thunderbirds look as good as my '68 Super Kodiak. Here is one that looked like a spotted pup before refinishing. I'm real pleased with the way it came out.             Bowdoc's restoration 101 is a super How To if you haven't read it you need to. I also picked up so really good tips from Droptine59 (Rich Lopez) these guys make it easy.

Here is a 52" Red Wing hunter that thru the kindness of a fellow tradganger (Wadde) I got a chance to refinish.                    This baby was really rough and had little finish on the riser. It was amazing the transformation it made.

I shot it with a white rug on it, but didn't like the color so I took it off til I can get a black one. She shot fine and it suprised me when I checked the weight I would never have guessed it to be a 50# as light and limber as the limbs are.

I have always wondered how the Ben Pearson takedown system shot, do you have to have an elevated rest or can it be shot off the metal shelf?

I shoot almost all my bows off a rest, but they can all be shot off the shelf with a rug. I get better arrow flight with a rest. Just personal preference.

Glenn StCharles told me many many times the best shooting recurve ever built bar none. Was the mighty Red Wing Hunter built by Bob Lee.The early rosewood models was Glenn's all time favorites.
Now me ? me personaly I never seen a bow I did not like and or like to shoot.I've shot 200 year old long bows and I shot a Black Widow yesterday that was built 5 weeks ago(real good shooter).Heck last spring we was winging arrows out of a sweet Nelly take down.Sorry to say guys but I'am one whom loves them all bd

I shoot my pearson signature off the shelf, its fine off the shelf.  It not one of my better shooting bow though, I think the takedown system makes them feel "blocky" on my hands.

I like the howatts, they're hard to beat.  I'm one Ventura short of a full line.

Sal, I shoot my signature off of a small dremel heavy duty buffing pad cut in half. I was shooting a pearson stallion. Had to,go on vacation to see the inlaws and wanted a takedown so I bought the sig from my son. Did not like the blockiness at first but after getting used to it I shoot it better than my stallion.
