Loctite 420 or 495
« on: December 10, 2011, 01:50:00 AM »
Several very good threads going on at the moment but was hoping to get a quick question in!
I'm attempting to repair a hair line crack on the belly side just above the grip where the lamination ends. This is not at the fade but as it ends at the grip.  Not a lot of stress here. But the vibration seems to be making it worse. After reading bd's great repair info I mail ordered 420 for the wicking ability but received 495. The viscosity difference is 420 at 2, with 495 at 35. The strength is similar. If I apply the 495 very slowly will it soak in enough to do the job?

Never heard of 495 sounds very different, and it is not what you ordered. Can you return it?

chit Larry I don't think so as I recall without chart in hand 495 is a bit thicker gap filler.420 is for gaps of I believe up to .002 and 495 is for gaps of up to .005 the 495 may harden before it can wick itself into the gap .... hummmmmmmmmm bd

bd, Cure time for the 420 is 15 sec. where the 495 is 30 sec. To see it in the bottle it moves like water. Bjorn, you keep later hours then I do!! Not sure how easy it will be to return.
Thanks!!!

yeah Lar that viscosity number has something to do with it.And the gap filling is also a factor. You may be able to use the 495 and may not have to apply as much of the 495 as you do 420 to get the same affect .420 will fill the .002 and 495 will fill up to .005 ? I am pretty certin unless its a very shallow crack the 495 I know does not wick as well as the 420 or as fast and may harden before wicking itself into the gap.420 will wick in a .002 gap but the 495 will only wick into a gap of around .005.Most bear bow stress cracks which really are not caused by stress in any way shape or form. They are actualy cause by expansion and not stress. But about 99% of those little beggers are between .0001 and .0005 bd

bd, Thanks for the info. I'll probably get this sent back and get the 420. Appreciate your expertise!!

Larry,  bd is the one to listen to... 420 is the stuff to use.  495 is too thick to wick up into hairline cracks properly.  If you cannot get ahold of 420, you might also try Kwik-it Thin (red label available at 3Rivers).  I've used it with good results when 420 was not available.  It is a very thin CA glue similar to 420 that wicks up into tight cracks and stress very well.
