What's the preferred wax for old bows?
« on: January 18, 2012, 02:13:00 PM »
What wax do you all use to protect your bows? Has anyone tried Nufinsh auto wax, it's the stuff in an orange bottle? I have used it on old cars with good result. Is there something better for use on bows?

Bowdoc's polish is great.  I also use Macquires(sp?)boat cleaners and their pure wax. They have an entire range of cleaners...their oxidation remover is good for old bows that are really coated with crud. It's not quite as harsh as automotive polishing compound, but pretty close. You can use finer and finer polishes until the final coat of pure wax. If the finish is already in good shape, then I like Bowdocs polish and then a coat of the pure wax.  I doubt if you absolutely need both, but the Macquires products work great on the finishes on boats and campers, and I've always had their products around.

I've used Johnson&johnson paste wax for years. Same kind as your wood floors. Once a year pr as needed for heavy use.

My favorite is Butchers Wax. Toughest, hardest wax I've ever seen, used on bowling alleys, furniture,floors,etc.. You can use it on leather goods too, paste in a can.
Smells of turpentine when applied, but quickly goes away as it dries/hardens.

question about wax,,, I have a 53 static kodiak that I will shoot and hunt with often,,, is this the correct way to protect the finish by rubbing on wax??  if so do you guys just go over the entire riser and limbs or is there a certain application process you follow.

also,, do you tape over the leather grip or avoid it carefully?

thanks T
