Howard Hill and string silencers
« on: December 14, 2007, 10:42:00 AM »
Did Howard Hill use string silencers. I must have too much time on my hands but I don't recall having seen any string silencers during his shooting photos, dvd's, tapes, etc. Any members have info.?

He don´t used them, he used heavy arrows...

But also on other old fellas gear you can´t see silencers, I think they were not stylish in the old days

On a well set up Hill, you don't need 'em.

I have Hush Puppies on My Hill, Butt it's more of looks thing, not realy needed....
I also have them on my Saxon longbow, butt I only used half of a Hush puppy on each end and that bow is dead quiet even with aluminums....

Buckhorn:
Too answer your question, no Howard did not use anything on his string, I don't remember them being used until the Compound entered the picture.

Thanks to all repondents. I've never noticed much difference using the silencers - thought it was something one had to do and tried many types - got to thinking that I didn't remember our elders using them too much and prompted the question. The silencers are coming off! Thanks again

I would still use them, no matter what the setup you still get that little twang from the string. I have shot my hills without and prefer them with, but thats just me.

On my Howard Hill with dacron string it seemed to have more handshock with silencers. And on my Howard Hill with tip overlays I used a D97 with a pair of whoolie wisps and it is quiet and has less handshock of either.

I have fastflight on all of my Hills and I think they help, but with B-50 you definitely don't need silencers on a Hill...unless you just want them.

I agree with C ott.  I use D-97 and wooly whispers.  The string is pretty quiet to begin with, but the silencers to tone it down a little more.  Dacron has a lower pitched sound in comparison.  Silencers aren't really needed with either material, but I usually put them on for hunting.
