where gold tips are made??......
« on: December 14, 2007, 12:58:00 PM »
Awhile back, I saw a where a tradganger posted that gold tip shafts    are made in mexico. Is this true?

My understanding is they moved to Mexico, had some serious problems, and moved back to the USA.  We don't carry Gold Tip so I'm not positive on that.

They are made in Mexico. There was a problem many months ago, that is why we were so short on them in 2006. But, that problem has been resolved.
This bit of truth will hurt, but it is my honest opinion based on thousands of Gold Tip shafts coming thru our shop.......in the past several months, after moving to Mexico, the quality of the shafts has improved. As you know, we deal with a ton of Gold Tips, mostly blems. But the number of blems coming out of Mexico is less than from Utah, and the blems are not as bad. I am pure American thru and thru, but it is the truth, the Mexicans seem to be doing a better job. No one wants to see our jobs leave the USA, but we now live in a global economy, and to stay competitive with shafts made in China and Korea, I guess it had to be done.

BFinegan, I just got some "blems" from SRTA and they are pretty nice. I mean, there are a few little marks on the finish, but not enough to worry about. John sells a good product and I'm certain he wouldn't sell a product that he didn't believe in.

Ive also wondered about the blems.... is it a blem due to a finish issue...or a spine, or weight issue.... John is outstanding to do business with and will not steer you wrong.

This is what Preston Edwards at GT told me when I was dealing with them:  The tradional shafts are made from shafts that are out of specs from their other lines (straightness, weight, whatever).  They put the graphic coating on them to make them Traditionals from these shafts.  Blems in Traditionals are only suppost to be cosmetic blems.  They should fall within spec of what they are advertised and should not be cracked or unsafe in any way. dino

Total honesty here......they are suppose to be cosmetic blemishes only. In most packages of a dozen you can hardly find anything that looks like a blemish. Some shafts may have a white line or you may see small black lines where the woodgrain finish did not cover properly. But, we do find some with other issues. I personally check every blem shaft before I ship it. Since we ship so many of these, it is possible some problems might slip thru. I inspect each shaft by putting each one on a spin checker to find any not spinning straight. I also check the ends of each shaft for cracks. I do find a shaft from time to time with end crack or not spinning straight. There are times I have been out of town (hunting) and my wife ships the shafts. In preparation of those times, I prebox the inspected shafts so my wife can ship.During those times we have had a shaft pulled from the wrong box that may not be perfect.
The biggest problem we have with these shafts is not being able to stay in stock. We have had an occasional complaint from shooters (mostly compound shooters) who think these $39.95 per dz shafts should have the same tolerances as shafts selling for $120 or more. If you want to hit the 12 ring from 50 yards, do not buy blemished shafts. But, if you are like me and the thousands of other traditional shooters who have bought them and are satisfied, they will shoot fine and are a bargain.
We can only apologize if we do not have enough to avoid being out of stock.
That is as straight forward as I can possibly describe the blems.

Got a couple of dozen of 'em coming my way.
I would say if you need any arra's, John is the guy to talk to, if nothing else the customer service.
Thanks John.

Unfortunately, not all Gold Tip Traditional Blems are equal.  5 of my last 24 from two dozen I ordered were not straight - quite a bit of wobble on four of them.  One of the 24 had little nicks all the way up and down the shaft, across the length - kind of looked like mechanical cuts.

The other thing to think about is the weight tolerances.  Gold Tip advertises +/- 2 grains on their Expedition and XT shafts, so that means they should be within 4 grains of each other for the dozen (+2, -2 = 4 grains spread if you think about it).  On my dozen XT's this year, I found that to be accurate - my dozen were all within a 3 grain window.  On my Expeditions this year, however, I found they were a 7 grain spread....

.... on the traditional blems I ordered - these were the exact weights and conditions of the shafts, as I kept track of them:

3 worst looking of the bunch (large black spots and lines):

1) 258 Nicked shaft - the one I noted above
2) 259 Bent shaft - wobbled badly
3) 261

7 "not so bad" looking:

4) 258
5) 258 Bent shaft - wobbled slightly
6) 259
7) 259
8) 259
9) 262
10) 264

14 looked like they didn't have ANY blemishes at all (perfect looking arrow shafts):

11) 256
12) 258
13) 258
14) 261 Bent shaft - wobbled badly
15) 261 Bent shaft - wobbled badly
16) 261
17) 261
18) 261
19) 261
20) 261
21) 262 Bent shaft - wobbled badly
22) 262
23) 264
24) 269

So, I had a spread across two dozen arrows of 256 to 269 grains - a 13 grain difference across the board.  Not a huge deal, but the 6 that were bent or damaged bothered me, so I contacted Gold Tip and was told to ship them back for a replacement.  I have.  They should have arrived on Thursday of this past week.  The lady I spoke to on the phone was very polite and helpful - one of the many things I have come to like and appreciate from Gold Tip.

So... I took 11 of my best looking shafts, and the best of the "not so bad looking" and made my hunting arrows with them.  The 5 remaining "not so bad looking" were made into practice arrows, and the one worst looking one that wasn't bent or damaged was used for bare shaft tuning.... so I've been fairly happy with them.

Don't get me wrong here guys and gals - this isn't meant to be a hit on Gold Tip or buying traditional blems.  I still plan to buy them again, and I've used Gold Tip for years.  However, you should realize, as I have come to realize - these aren't weight matched, top of the pick shafts - they have cosmetic blems, and more than likely your dozen won't be within that +/- 2 Grains tolerance.

For the money, they are a great deal, and I'd still recommend them to most anyone.

All the best,
Glenn

One more point. When we sell as a vendor at the 3d events, we can not possibly check every shaft. If you been in our tent, you know how busy it gets. We leave it up to the customer to check them and get them back to us if they find "issues". Some of the dozen packaged shafts we sell at the events could very possibly be as described by Cajuntec above.
When we get different batches from Gold Tip, some are all near perfect. Some batches are not as perfect. We do our best to provide a good product at a great price.
