First ever refinish (help with crack)
« on: November 12, 2012, 01:04:00 AM »
Whew, haven't been here in a while...

Peruzing an antique show last week, I stumbled upon a Ben Pearson Colt, and was kind of... reintroduced into the trad scene. A nice little 27# target bow for 40 bucks. I saw it and thought, "Yeah, I remember seein a few of these around." So I decided to pick it up.

Since then, I've begun refinishing it. It's almost completely sanded with 220 right now. There is a split through the glass on one limb tip that runs out the end. Is the bow shootable? If not, I'll hang it on my wall and get another.

It is through the glass, you can see it on the end of the tip, and it's still there after I've sanded it. I've since filled it with super glue.

I know it's only a Colt, but I think this may be the beginning of something...

Pics are before sanding.

If that crack is down into the wood, would be risky to shoot.

It's not into the wood, just through the glass. It stops at the wood.

Thanks.

If it was something I wanted to make shootable, I would put an underlay on both limb tips and shoot it.

Sorry. Forgot to mention this is on the back of the bow if that changes anything. Would I want overlay instead, or still an underlay? (not entirely sure I want to make it shootable, might end up a wall hanger.)

Thanks for the help guys.

I would add overlays as well as the underlays. Just to be safe.

Tough spot for a crack. Stress cracks don't usually happen there. Could be more serious than that. I agree with the over/underlay suggestions.
