Any information appreciated
« on: July 17, 2013, 08:53:00 PM »
I have a 1947 Michigan vehicle number plate which I got to tie in with my Bear collection. I understand this was the year Fred opened the Grayling plant so I thought it fitted in and good to have. The plate is Yellow with Black letters and numbers JD-46-27.Being in the other side of the World I wondered if Michigan USA number plates are the same colour Statewide or vary by area.Hope this does not sound like a dumb question.

Looks like you nailed it!

Michigan Department of Natural Resources shows your 1947 plate as statewide (all 83 counties in Michigan used the same plate color):

1947

1947 black on orange MI license plate Light orange base, black numbers/letters. One license plate was required.

1948

1948 black on dull silver MI license plate Dull silver base, black numbers/letters. These plates used the heaviest gauge steel of any plates issued in the 1940s. One license plate was required.

Michigan alternated two color combinations from 1948 to 1953: black on silver the first year, white on black the next year.

It sounds like a question that makes a lot of sense...at one time here in Alberta, Canada license plates changed colour (note the British spelling of that word) and configuration frequently...for many years now they have remained the same and we simply add the appropriate year sticker to up date them...things like that change all the time at the whim of legislators

I set out a while ago to reduce my herd of 40 bows...And I am finally down to 42

Thanks very much for the link and info. Looking close at the plate it has a orange tinge which fits and is the same marked layout as illustration in link for 47. Sure looks like it sits in the year Grayling Plant started.
Thanks again it will fit in nicely.
