Bear Go Boom....
« on: July 31, 2013, 08:17:00 PM »
Apparently this 56" Lady Polar was tired of me drawing her to 28".....
Luckily I escaped with nothing more than a pretty good brush burn on my bow arm from the upper limb.

I shot the bow numerous times before, but tonight I strung it up to go shoot and drew it back in the basement before heading outside and she left go. Broke right at the end of the upper fade.

You just never know when these vintage units are gonna call it quits on ya!!

I just learned:

A. 39 pounds at 24 inches is enough.
B. Short arms are safer than long arms.
C. Grayling Bears are still pretty even after they try to kill you.
D. You have the longest Bear key fob in the world.

Oldschool- Sorry about your broken bow. She looked like a beauty.

Tony- Not to make light of Oldschool's misfortune but your post gave me a chuckle, especially the comment about the key fob. I have a Bear key fob hanging off of my visor in my truck and I couldn't help but picture that "longer" one hanging in it's place.
I guess we all gotta go sooner or later.

Wow That Stinks! glad you didn't get hurt. Had a 56" grizzly do the same thing last month. I have to agree with Tony. I have a short 25.5" draw and feel a lot safer drawing vintage bow than I would with anything longer. I just buy heavier bows.

Hey John, everytime I think I hear an old bow creak at full draw, I remember your Rocky Balboa mug shot after your own ka-boom!
Nick's close call reminds us all to be careful, but I still envy his new key fob AND lamp kit.
The only bow that ever came close to this for me has been a Ben Pearson Mustang that whacked me pretty good when it suddenly twisted like a bucking bronco when I tried to string it.

Tony- I never want to hear that ka-boom again.Talk about dotting your eye.Ouch!!

Oldschool- The key fobs are a great idea for the tips, now all you have to do is go break another bow so you'll have a matching riser. Then you can make furniture out of them like I do.Just finished up my latest lamp project,a 1962 Bear lamp to go along with my '59er.Beats using them for firewood!!

Great lamp, John!

Now all Nick needs to get is a broken lefty Lady Polar that escaped the bonfires and he will have 4 key chains and a lamp.

Very nice lamp John! I hate to see a set of 62's in that state, but you did a very good thing with those two.

Nick, Just very glad that you are ok. My brother has a 29" draw and mine is only 25.5" I shot a 56" Grizzly in my stash of bows, and let my brother shoot it before deciding to sell. I had my back to him watching my kids when I heard a loud POP! I turned around to see him stagger a bit, and saw the top limb of the grizzly snapped. My first reaction was fear for my brother as I asked him if he was ok? He laughed and thanked me for worrying about his safety over the broken bow. I am glad he was safe, but it was a lesson learned about checking these oldies over very close for potential hazard.

This was the first bow out of hundreds that I have ever had break. Sold the bow as parts on the big site for $10 so someone could maybe salvage the coin, make key chains, or turn it into a piece of art like John did.

One of my pair of 63 Polars had the dark red tips like yours...the other one had green
I set out a while ago to reduce my herd of 40 bows...And I am finally down to 42
