Help with a kodiak special
« on: March 05, 2014, 10:09:00 AM »
I know it's a tough picture of the wrong side, but a friend has this bow and wants to get rid of it. I want to offer him a fair price to help him out but I'm not great with kodiak specials

Anyone have an idea what year it is... Or value?

Maybe value if it has a metal site window, and a value for all wood?

Just looking to offer a reasonable amount, thanks. Any help is appreciated

The 1963-65 KS looked very similar to me, but if serial # starts with a "5", then it's probably a 63-64.  The "experts" will come along soon to verify.

Values of the Specials are not up to what the Kodiaks bring, but still they are nice looking and nice shooting bows.  Based up on assumption it's in excellent shape, I would think that $200-300 would be a range of value.

Hey Lon!
I am wrong more often than not dating them, but I thought in the mid-60's Bears serial #'s, 1st # represent the year?

Hey Kurt!

I'm wrong more than I like to admit, but that serial# thing only applies to Bears 1965-69.  So a Bear from 1963-64 could not be dated by serial.

That's what I have heard Lon, from the looks of it I'm guessing a '63.

Anyone have a guess at what a good condition left handed '63 would be valued?

I have a couple of R/H 1963 Kodiak Specials. I'm guessing $200-$300 in excellent condition.

Thanks jack! Just trying to help him get the most. He's in Need, but since I'm righty I'll have to resell it to cover what I buy it for.

I appreciate the help folks, thanks.

Tyler,

Even though there were far less made left handers are usually harder to sell. You just need to find a lefty looking for a '63 Kodiak Special or better yet two left handers looking for one.

Yup, '63. If Bear had put different color glass on the limbs, I think a lot of guys would fall all over themselves for the 63KS if looking for lighter weight hunting bows.

There are a couple of important pieces of information missing...although most Kodiak Specials are 66 inches I know that the 1963 was also made in a 63 inch version...also the draw weight can have an effect on the selling price..once again most KS were made less that 50 pounds in draw weight but some were more than that...I was just thinking the other day I would like to have a left handed 63 KS but you caught me in a limited disposable cash situation with two bow deals in the works

I've got a 61 Kodiak Special that had been refinished, and paid $180.  It's 66", 38@28, and shoots very well.  I draw it to 31", and my wife and daughter can both shoot it as well.  Beautiful bow.

I agree with most above that the older Specials shoot like butter as both mine do and they may be the best deals of the old Bear bows. Although I like the speed of my '61 Kodiak better, I use my '59 Special for 3D shoots constantly. Just based on the good looks of the wood your bow Zippercurve, there sure shouldn't be any problem selling it.

I'd check for warped limbs. Value depends on draw weight too.

Yup....a quick $250.00 helps him out and I would think a fair price. They are very nice bows...
