Modify my '75 Super K

I can't help but keep looking at that sweet Super K posted in the thread by "highlife".  I like it so much I'm considering doing the same to mine.  I like the gloss, but love that satin, can shoot off of the flat shelf, but would really like a nice radius.

I don't want to go hacking on this thing.....it's too nice.  Any suggestions on doing the work?  I was considering contacting Big Jim cause I'd like a nice beaver tail grip added once it's done.

My suggestion if you have a nice bow, is to keep it nice and find one with holes or something and start hacking on that one. There are those who crave all original bows, I am one. There are plenty of bows with holes drilled or other flaws that are great shooters and perfect for a refinish and shelf lowering. Of course, you are the owner...

In '75 alone, Bear made over 350,000 bows so you don't have a super rare bow.  However, this SK is one of my favorite performers and I would tend to follow Missaukee's advice and grab another to hack on.  Sending it off for a modification, refinish, shipping, etc can run into some bucks...BUT "you are the owner."

I know it's not a rare bow, and yea, she's dang pretty the way it sits.  Maybe just a nice grip and some old school limb covers.

It's always a disappointment to find a nice condition vintage bow that has been modified in some way. Whenever I want to get creative I look for something beat up but solid with good straight limbs that comes to me cheap and then make something out of it. Once a bow is modified it is done and the classic vintage perspective is gone!!
I have seen some beautiful quality work done to some of these older shooters and can appreciate the effort of craftsmanship but still prefer them clean and original.....

I'm definitely wanting to hunt with the bow this year.  I took the limb wraps off that I put on and man is it shiny.  Always been a hunter first and shiny things are a no, no.  I'm going to have to think on it more.  In reality, it shoots fine off the flat rest.  I can tell it wants time in the woods........at 65#, those 2219's rock the target.  Groups are tight too.

tight groups...sounds like you enjoy shooting it...just shoot it!

In terms of hacking at it the shelf on a Super K...that's what Fred did to his personal bows.  It's kind of interesting that they he would reshape the rest on his.

Of course, he got the opportunity to do it once a year or so...LOL
