reshaping grip on A handle?

I really want to reshape the grip on my new two-tone.  But not too excited  about  pulling  the  medallion  the compass or the limb sockets.  I can find stuff  on the magnesium  handles but not the wood.

The medallion and hardware should be easy to remove.  It is the compass that has me puzzled. I suspect that any prying or pulling on it will ruin the cover (crystal?) as they are thin and easily cracked.  Perhaps a replacement compass could be purchased from Bear and then you could proceed knowing that you have that covered when it is time to go back together with it.  Or you could carefully tape up the compass and use spray to refinish after shaping the grip. Taping it would be my choice, I believe.

I seem to remember seeing replacement compasses in the 3 Rivers catalog but don't know about the quality.

Is the medallions  hot glued in like the old ones?  Yeah not sure on the compass either.  Think taping it off might be the best bet.

I haven't pulled a coin on anything newer than a 1962.  I would give it a shot with the hot bolt head and hot melt glue trick to see it that will pull it.  That is if they are metal.  I haven't even looked at the new takedowns.  My 59er is metal...I think.  It looks  like it.

If you're only reshaping the grip you shouldn't have to remove the coin or sockets.  Just put some tape over the coin while you sand down the wood.  Same for the compass.

If you do remove the coin using a hot bolt heat you'll need to clean off the old discolored finish from the heat but that isn't difficult.  I've refinished a few Bear takedowns and have not removed the limb socket/hardware from any of them.

Good to hear.  I've refinished a few older bows, but not a new one I've paid lots$$ for.  But the grip just isn't right.  Not sure what finish I'm going to use yet.  I've got an old grizzly that I refinished with true oil with a satin spray on finish that turned out nice.

Chris,  just curious as to what you don't like about the grip?

It's the thickest grip I own.  To me it feels like I'm holding a 2x4.  I was going to try and sell it but the going price is way lower than I want to let it go for.  So then I tried to find someone who thought their grip was too thin and would trade even up with no luck.  So here I am.
