1967 Bear Cub 62" 29# Any Info?
« on: April 25, 2016, 01:20:00 AM »
Hi Everyone,
I just purchased a 1967 Bear Cub 62", 29# Bear Cub on ****, to use as a lighter weight practice bow. I like one piece recurves and was having a hard time finding a new one at 30# or less that was not real expensive, as in custom. So I went for this vintage bow. My "regular" bow is a 2014 60" 45# super Kodiak, but due to back injuries it's hard for me to use for practice shooting.

Does anyone know anything about this bow? What kind of wood is in the riser? Any problems associated with the bow model? The seller didn't know anything about it. Not sure if this link to pics will work but here goes:

If that doesn't work, basically the glass looks like it's light green, and the riser is light brown wood with fairly large streaks of dark brown running through it.

Thanks!
Shandor

OK, after looking at other vintage bows I figured the riser wood is made of zebra wood.

1967 Cubs were made with Hard Rock Maple and the glass was made in assorted colors- according to Coppen.

Coppen has a photo of a Zebrawood Cub in his book, but it is somewhat confusing. The image is entitled 64 Cub, but he talks about The Zebrawood Cub that he saw in the  text for  65  Cubs.

What does your serial number start with?
1967 Cubs should start with a 7.
1965 Cubs should start with a 5.
1964 and earlier Cubs could start with anything.

This is what happened with my Bearcat. The serial number started with a 7, so I thought is was a 1967. But it actually turned out to be a 1964

As rb61 stated 67 cubs were Maple risers. 65 cubs came in assorted hardwoods including Zebrawood. it could be a 64 but my guess is if it is Zebrawood it is a 1965 model. As stated the serial number should start with a 5 if it is a 1965.
