« on: April 25, 2007, 07:58:00 PM »
this is something that has just come up. my grandpanrets have a thousend acre farm in the mountains of virginia. it is the prettiest place i know of with tons and tons of wildlife like whitetail and black bear and wild turkey. this just in, the farm as my family calles it is in jeopardy from an old miner that lives on the other side of the mountain. he has theatened and is trying to dig a 500 acre strip mine for shale right over the ridge from the farmhouse. it would ruin everything from the creek to the hunting to the fun! my grandfather syas hes going to fight it but what can he do? this guys got money and hes very good at using it to get what he wants. any suggestions and prayers are very wleocme along with any other comments you have. it means alot to me and my family that this farm stay in the glorious shape it is for generations to come.

Hey, Matt...

Your dad has described that land to me at B-more several times...he even was going to talk to your Grandad about donating it to a kid's Kamp...  :(

I'm so sorry to hear of the challenges...

Prayers for God's will to prevail and your Grandparents to rest easy in His Will be done.

There are laws that a company has to abide by. I have been involved in the mining industry in the past and the EPA would be the people to contact. This person/company should be required to do an environmental impact study and show that the surrounding property will not be affected. There is also a Law called the "reclamation act" which requires a company to restore the land that it has mined to the original condition. Some companies have found loop holes through this but that is the law. I would give the EPA a call and tell them the situation. Might also give MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration)a call as well. These are the federal boys that oversees mining operations in the USA. You might try and find a lawyer that specializes in this field. I would think that some of the folks here have contacts that might be able to steer you the right way. It will be a battle. I pray that the Lord will give you the strength and perseverance to make a stand....John

I think Trout Unlimited would be interested in your grandparents' stream, and what the mining would do to it. I just wish an endangered plant or animal could be found in the vicinity, that needs to be protected from the noise and disruption of heavy industry. The farm is indeed a place of beauty, favored with abundant wildlife, and people who love it. I am asking that God takes sides, here.

I hope she's listening to the recordings I gave her, and can recognize the bluebirds even when she can't see them. I have found quite a comfort in that ability, hearing my friends in the woods and knowing who is there and what they are doing. It will sure-fire lower blood pressure!
