Surgery Scheduled
« on: January 26, 2009, 12:32:00 PM »
Well, my shoulder surgery is scheduled for Feb. 4th. Doctor says that it will be an open incision surgery, no scope surgery, and that rehab will be 6 months. He says that it is very unlikely that I'll be able to shoot my bow before the 6 months is up. I can't even turkey hunt with a shotgun. But, I can call for my grandson. That'll be fun.

Good luck, look at it this way--This should extend the years of traditional shooting for you  :)

I hope that the recovery goes well and that the time passes quickly for you. Why not stockpile some good reading books to help pass the time. I was out shooting after heart surgery as soon as I left the hospital and I probably should have had more patience. Be smarter than I was.

Good luck.
6 months seems like an eternity, but will be here before you know it.

Had the scope surgery last April and the open incision in December. The open incision actually was recovering faster than the scope.
Good luck and don't rush it.

The consequences of years of abuse through heavy lifting and armwrestling competitions are showing up. I will be 56 in two months.

I had scope surgery on my left shoulder 3 years ago and it went great. They did it in february and I was hunting in May (although I took it easy).

I just got an MRI for my right shoulder problem. Hope that works out.
May your next adventure lighten your heart, test your spirit, and nourish your soul.

I tore my bicep tendon last may, had the surgery and endured the 6 months of rehab.  It'll go faster than you think but do exactly what the doctor tells you.  Not worth the risk for rushing the process.

i had 2 shoulder surgeries in 2 years with 25mo of therapy total. Doc said the best thing i could do for myself is shoot by bow (weight reduced-this is where a compound is handy as you can adjust the draw weight). Said something like 15 muscles in the shoulder and upper back are used to draw, helped get me back on the road.

DO YOUR REHAB and DO NOT do silly things like pick up a bag of feed because "someone had to". You have no idea how much i hear that from patients.

Let those muscles heal, strengthen slowly and you will feel stronger than you can remember.

Had the same "open" surgery 6 years ago.  Terrible impingement tore rotator...spur shreadded the tendon...lots of repair...

Had it done Aug 27th...and was shooting my huntin weight bow by Nov!

Each person is different. Each surgery/surgeon is different and recovery is also different.

My surgeon told me "be 6 months till you're back to normal activity..." Then it was "be a year till you are totally symptom free".

  :)   They don't know...

Here's my suggestion: Make sure you find out where the line is between PAIN and DAMAGE to what they fixed! I pushed them for that...and they responded. Most folks don't want much pain...but pain can be either your body being angry at you for the surgery and you can push through it..or...OR..it's your body's way of tellin you that you're screwing up big time and damaging what's been fixed.

Make them tell you what is what...then do what you are allowed to do with a vengance. You'll be back out there sooner'n you think! And you'll be so freakin busy working hard to get better...doing what you're allowed to do as often as allowed...you won't have time to be sorry or bored!   :)

Prayers for a great surgery, a doc that tells it like it is and the will to endure all that lies ahead.

Amen to all the prayers. Prayers for healing. God's best.
