Prayers for a dear friend Updated 1/9/12
« on: October 07, 2011, 06:15:00 PM »
I've already asked for prayers for my Dad's situation, but I came home to call my older neighbor's wife. He was found to have a small cancerous lesion in his colon through the 5 yr colonoscopy.

The did the surgery Tuesday.  They'd hope for a temporary colostomy, but came out to say there was insufficient sphycter muscle left to close his butt hole so asked if they could do a full permanent colostomy.

This is an amazing mid-70's couple who are so very active and full of life...he works circles around me and is a decade or more older than I!

The 'bag' would have been an adjustment, but no biggie for his 'can do' attitude.

I called last night after getting the news about my Dad's fiasco w/ a bed deal at the nursing home...and his wife said there was more bad news.

They 'found' 80% closing off the artery to his one leg(???) and in the operation, it closed off and they may have to amputate. They did a 2nd operation to remove the blockage and he's really knocked down hard with two operations...if the leg doesn't rebound big time by tomorrow, it comes off.

I about cried! I don't even know if I should bother her tonite or not... I feel like an elephant is sitting on my chest between poor Curvin (guy's name) and my DAd's situation!

Please pray for God's healing intervention that Curvin's leg might be spared and he can rebound and just learn to deal with the simple 'bag' and not end up a mid 70's amputee and have to sell their home, move and all that is involved...they both still work loving what they do...

I feel so sad for them...

Thanks for your prayers on Curvin and Jeanie's behalf!

UPDATED 1/9/2012

Curvin had several unsuccessful amputation surgeries thru the later fall of 2011...each taking more leg.

They now think someone forgot to release a clamp when they did the colon surgery, but not sure... no reason for the leg to have died...clot wasn't as reported initially. Who knows.

Last surgery took part of the hip and his butt cheek...but he's recovering well now... starting to show some healing and doing rehab. Even gets home for a day on weekends, but it's wearing on his family: wife and grown kids who have to do super human things to transport him at this stage.

continued prayers asked for Curvin's rehab and progress to continue to greater independence, according to His will!

I hate hearing things like that but I can pour it out to God. I pray that Curvin and his wife can do the same. Prayers for God's best.

Had a full day planned to play "catch up" after a tough 2 weeks of weird schedules.

Got a call earlier this AM from my neighbor's wife...asked if I wanted coffee and to come over to get caught up on Curvin. Never happend in 3 + yrs here, so figured I was "needed." Just spent 90 min visiting and trying to build some sense of hope.

They likely will take the leg today.  That 80% blockage has been there for a long time, likely because he was so active, nobody ever knew and the only discomfort was around his knees but he had double knee replacements 8 yrs ago...so they expected the twinge...this man worked circles around me!

They did bypass surgery on the leg put in stints, etc, but the foot was "starved" for 12 hrs before the discoloration showed and now the leg has to go...just depends on exactly when and how far up.

Jeanie is worried that Curvin, who has a great attitude and quick humor for most things, will give up and not want to live as when he turned 70, he told everyone at the party he "didn't want to get old and feeble so just shoot him".  But in his brand of humor, he pointed out to all his kids they were terrible shots and would likely only maim him and hurt each other, so maybe not!  :)  He's now 74 and very proud and particular about his appearance...

I hope he will rebound and start telling jokes that he'll have to get a job now at "I-hop" cause that is his normal brand of humor!

I guess prayers need to shift that they can save as much of the thigh as possible to make a prosthesis possible and that Curvin will opt to live and bounce back.

Lord in your Mercy....

I talked to his wife today.

This am, they took the leg off well above the knee with just enough "stub" for a prostehesis.

They don't know if the tissue is ok or if they'll have to go back and remove it to the hip...all because "they didn't know there was a blockage"  :(

I can't help but think, knowing Curvin just a bit, that if he had aches and pains, he ignored them and pushed thru them.

Warning to all... when something isn't right, share it with a doctor!! All this could have been prevented if they'd had a clue, not saying Curvin had trouble, but if he did, he passed it off as his knee replacements 8 yrs ago.

I feel so sad for him. Prayers coveted that this stump is enough removed and will heal well and provide for an artifical leg...

Lord in yoru mercy, hear our prayers, amen.

Curvin was finally awake enough to be interactive, for about an hour... all his bride of so many years could speak of tonite...  :)

They have to wait a few days to see if there was too much tissue damage from the blocked artery to allow the 'stump' to heal and live...

He could still loose the rest of the stump and then no artificial leg.

Prayers asked that His will be to let the stump heal and Curvin get on with his recovery.

I also learned he will now need both chemo and radiation to boot! What else?  :(

Poor dear man and his family!

He was fitted for a prosthetic (?) butt cheek. Without two cheeks, we fall over! (makes sense) so they've made him an artificial one he should get tomorrow. The "trial fitting" he said was a blessing...he could sit without holding onto anything... amazing.

continued prayers asked for Curvin's rehab and progress to continue to greater independence, according to His will!
