Duffy
« on: August 27, 2013, 10:52:00 AM »

Don't know if this is the place to put this. My buddy has a liver that is full of cancer. He has been such a big hearted and loyal dog. I have been blessed to have this giant in my life. Duffy came to us through mastiff rescue when he was two. He was a wild dog who couldn't handle being petted or  cuddled. His owner had got sick and died in the hospital.  His caretaker during her hospital stay had two strokes during that time. Duffy and the caretaker's dogs were being fed by a neighbor and left to run wild. In our home he became a bed hog and couch companion. Duffy has a bottomless pit of a stomach and will steal food off the counter or table whenever the opportunity arises. We have had a great nearly eight years with the old man.
Watching him now isolate himself and just lay there is killing me. I owe it to him to let him go. Just having trouble saying goodbye. I am trying to pick the perfect time to put him down but don't think there is such a thing. I know this is trivial compared to the struggles of many on here. But this "tough guy" is feeling like a big baby.

If you check this forum's history, you will see many came here to mourn their dogs... they are "family" for many years.

they don't last as long as people, but they, unlike people, give ALL their love EVERY day... maybe they know their time is shorter-- or they're just devoid of all the silly behaviors of man, so they just love and expect little in return.

You will know when the time is right... Love sometimes means doing what is RIGHT, not what feels good!

Dogs are people too, we hear, so know there will be remorse, missing and grief after Duffy is gone.

Prayers for God's best

Said goodbye today. Felt an overwhelming peace as soon as he went. Again I know this is small in the big scheme of life's hurdles.   He gave my family his all and asked only to be near us and to have his bowl filled.
If you have a chance to get a rescued dog do it.

Congratulations for making a tough decision based in love for Duffy, not based on your feelings of impending loss.

Dogs go to heaven, so perhaps the Holy Spirit lifted that ache off your heart once you'd done what you knew was the right thing for the grand member of your family.

May you know peace in the time that follows!

You did well...
