An update, wish it were a happier one...
« on: October 25, 2013, 11:10:00 PM »
My wife is still with us, she hasn't pined away yet, but I just spent eleven days in the hospital after a medication interaction left me in convulsions and vomiting up blood (as well as nearly destroyed my lungs and vocal chords.)  Worst part is, I won't ever walk normally again. I'm mostly wheelchair bound, able to take a few steps with a walker and generally scream when I do so.  They originally thought stroke but now they think the interaction (and the events during the psychotic episode afterwards) damaged the nerves in my legs severely, possibly beyond repair.  I'm on medicatio to prevent contractures, but I'm getting foot droop already from my right leg.  I'm going through PT, GI surgery wants me to call them back and I have solid counseling, but it's gonna be a wild ride from here on out without my legs.  Nobody's given me much hope on them based on previous experience with such damage, but all I want to do is make them stop hurting.  They can be dead for all I care, if they'd just stop feeling like fire and twisting.

With my upper body strength being very high, I can drag myself in a walker some.  It's also helping immensely in pushing my chair.  PT also wants me to pull my bow out again, to help me build the new muscles I'll need now to move myself around.  I'm cautiously optimistic, as I learn to be independent on wheels as I was with my walking stick.

So now people know where I was for a while, and what's happening.  I'll probably end up shooting shorter bows (or tilting my longbows considerably) but I still plan to shoot again when I'm allowed (which may not be for a while yet, according to PT.)  But I'm still planning to shoot and hunt from my chair-there are two disabled access hunting camps within a hour and a half drive from here.  Just might take me a while to get there.

ED,

I'm sorry to read of your complications and down-turn.     :(

I love your attitude, though, and your Faith will see you thru.  There was a chap injured in an industrial accident hereabouts many decades ago and left in a wheel chair...totally paralyzed from the waist down...His name was Vernon Kinsey.  His work buds set him up with a small archery shop in his garage and he built that, in a wheelchair, into a huge wholesale distributorship and a retail store.  He hunted a LOT out of his chair with his bows.

It can be done! You will "endeavor to persevere" (sorry, Josey Wales movie reference) and succeed!

I wish you all the blessings of pain free life and God's peace with your situation and your wife's!

Stroke now seems to be the most likely.  They're a common issue with Marfan's.  And the bow looks to be a long way out, but still doable.  I got a new chair, one actually meant to be pushed yourself, and I'm getting around a lot better.  A home health organization has offered to help me get a ramp built.  The walker isn't going to be an option, but I can walk a few steps supported on my old staff (as my right side is damaged more heavily) so I guess it evens out.

I still have lots of issues here.  My meds even when they don't interact are really hard on me.  Nerve damage hurts.  And we with Marfan's cannot grow calluses to control our chair with.  God will answer each petition in His time, but the enduring is still hard.

Amen to the enduring is hard.

If it was easy, all would be Believers.

We know that isn't true.

I admire and bow to your excellent attitude, which is a major point of making the best of what hand you're dealt!

Prayers for healing and quick and full recovery
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside thoroughly used up, totally worn out, with bible in hand and loudly proclaim...WOW...What a Ride!!!
