Hunting

I received this in my devotions this morning. Perfect since I'm headed to Nebraska to hunt deer.

Everything that lives and moves will be food for you.  – Genesis 9:3 NIV

I was once asked by a young man in a class of Russian students how I could hunt and be a Christian. I had just shown them some pictures of our family and some of me with a deer I had shot with my son that fall. “Good question,” I said.

The Bible teaches that God has given us all the animals to be food for us. If it is a cow that ends up as a Big Mac at McDonald’s or on your grill, or a wild deer that you bring home, these are some of the ways that God said that He provides for us.

It is not a sin to hunt or fish. I told the young man in Russia that it is not right to waste animals or to kill just to kill. My family enjoys the venison and fish I bring home. They are both healthy foods. I told them that I am conservationist and a firm believer in protecting our environment and managing our resources.

I think it is wise to teach our children these principles. “The Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons, men who... advocate abstaining from foods, which God has created to be gratefully shared in by those who believe and know the truth. For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected, if it is received with gratitude; for it is sanctified by means of the word of God and prayer” (1 Timothy 4:1‑5).

God has “richly supplied us with all things to enjoy” (1 Timothy 6:17). Therefore, enjoy!
But his bow will remain steady, and his hands will be skillful; because of the hands of the Mighty One of Jacob, because of the Shepherd, the Rock of Israel,  (Genesis 49:24 [NETfree])

Good luck in NE GAlen...travel safe. Keep us posted.

I had a farmer friend who said, "YOu have to kill it to eat it be it a carrot or a cow!"

I abstain from some foods that man's intrusion has defiled by cross breeding or pollution, but I do believe we're to be stewards and not Worship the Creature but the Creator!

Today, I got to finally go hunting in my new home of TN thru a round about invite to a landowner's grounds.

The storm in the coast has it raining here.  We got wet from well before daybreak. He put me in ashooting house with windows that slid open, but no way to shoot a RC in there without busting limbs.

I sat in a nice chair, listened to the rain on the low roof and dozed right off to sleep as it would have been near impossible to shoot but was grateful to be out there listening and smelling the woods and still be DRY!

Later, he comes by all jazzed up. He shot his first turkey with a bow, albeit a vintage 70's bear compound so no more about that...but a great day to be afield and many thanks to the Creator for the chance...and prayers for the coastal folks to remain safe

You too on your trip and hunt!

Yes Doc the sounds and smells stimulate the heart to a reality too few know of.

Those who oppose hunting generally don't know anything about nature and the role of hunters, or they are simply repeating a philosophy that they have accepted without really thinking much about it. Yes, game is given to us to use and enjoy, but we are expected to be good stewards of those gifts. At least the young Russian student asked a rational question rather than simply levelling an accusation, so there is hope that he may see the philosophical and ethical argument in favor of hunting. He asked his question in the context of a religious viewpoint, so your Biblical responses are very good. I think you gave a very solid answer to him.

Thank You Galen, Good luck in Nebraska.  when I was there, we were antelope hunting but we saw plenty of whitetails and mule deer.

I agree with Doc about the types of foods we choose.
Relax,

You'll live longer!

Sam,

I often wonder about such things.. I had a farm friend who was fond of saying, "You've got to kill it to eat it be it a carrot or a cow!"

People are so disconnected from the source of their foods they think not about anything but Walt Disney rendition of Bambi and Thumper I think...

I saw some years back where there was a group that even were wanting to legislate against fishing...cruel to drag them around by the lips fighting for their life! Catch and release was cruel too.

Yeah, ok...whatever.  All too often in our world, even we sportsman, can adopt the attitude of "IF I DON'T do it, then I don't care if it's outlawed or not!"

There are many old sayings about that, some waxing more biblical then others, but that is for another time/place.

I hope and pray safe travels and great times afield for Galen!!!

Travel was great praise God. I had a wonderful time with family and friends. Unfortunately the deer were nocturnal until the last few days. But I got the chance to chase a 6X5 mulie buck for a couple of miles before the wind switched when I was less than 20 yards from where he was bedded. So much fun mixed with so much frustration.

Praises for a safe return, good times, and actual time in proximity with God's own wonder in the form of a wily mule deer!

Welcome home!
