Coyote/rabbit hunting tomorrow morning, need help.
« on: January 05, 2008, 08:39:00 AM »
i will be out after ole wiley coyote and briar rabbit tomorrow with Bowspirit and i hope Adirondackman. seems to be a overly large population this year of both yote and rabbit. i'll be calling the yotes in with a couple antler distress calls that i have had luck with in the past. this is the first time with both in hand and i'm hoping Bowspirit threads the needle right through a nice, big yote!
Has anyone one tried calling them in within bow range? besides a decoy ( which i do not have ) and tips you can give me with bow hunting in mind? i have gun hunted them a lot so i know what i'm doing calling wise but i'm thinking its going to be difficult getting them in bow range and getting a shot off. how should 1,2 or 3 people set up? i was thinking about putting Chris in front of me to the left or right, which ever way we think they might come in. if John hunts as well maybe the caller in the middle and the other 2 hunters slightly to the right and left in front and behind? any info you could give would be greatly appreciated!

Sounds like you're thinking in the right direction. I've never tried to get them in bow range, but I think you all will need to adjust at every set up.

Good luck, take lots of pics and keep us posted!!!

The way I usualy set up for yotes is:

I think you need to give the yote something to see, smell, and hear. So I use a remote electric call. I put a rabbit hide on the speaker and put the speaker and hide as far in front of me that my remote will reach. It seems that every time I use some kind of food type call(as aposed to a challenge call)  the yotes will circle around down wind of me. The way I do it they cirlce down wind of the speaker and end up in my lap between me and the speaker When they are in that close an eye blink will spook them.

Ken get a small stuffed animal(brown)and tie a rabbit hide to one, should not be hard to get a bunny with the gun and than just peel the hide off. You can tie a string to it and kleve it about 20 yards out in front of the shooter. If the coyote comes in give the string a little tug for movement. It should help keep their attention so tyhe shooter can get the bow drawn. Shawn

When I call with a partner I set them downwind from me and where I hope the animal will come from.Wiley buggers come from anywhere but mostly from downwind. If I had more than one guy I'd set the other crosswind from the first. I don't spend much time on a stand,15 min max.Getting into your setup quietly is more important than your calling. My favorite decoy is two turkey primaries on a string with an alligator clip.Gives them something to focus on besides me and sets up fast and quiet.
If I have too I stop them with a mouth squeak. Make sure you draw before you squeak!
If you've got any treestands left up putting a guy in one and calling from the ground 50-100yds upwind of the stand can be deadly.I do this when pulling my stands after deer season.
I've noticed they like to travel along the same routes as the deer. Not always on the trails or in the same direction but close to them. Good luck.

Even if you hang a wing or a few larger feathwers upwind from you.  the dog will pay attention to it and try to go downwind from it to check out the smell.  By the time it realizes it wasted it's time checking that out you will already have an arrow in it.  Good luck
A bad day of hunting is still far better than a good day at work.
