shooting - made a break through today
« on: January 06, 2008, 07:41:00 PM »
This is probably old hat to most of you but I've got to tell someone and I don't have anyone, that I know of at the moment, to talk archery with in my daily circle of friends or workmates. So anyway I made a break through in my shooting today.

I had a feeling that part of my inconsistent shooting other than having not shot in 20 years, getting use to a new bow and drawing 50+ pounds again, etc. was inconsistent anchor point. I had always shot  with the index finger at the corner of my mouth and the bow position almost vertical/perpendicular to the ground. As I recall I came to this style years ago via gap aiming at first and then when I started using a sight (to help overcome inconsistent shooting).

So to get a better anchor point I started looking at pictures of shooters with the middle finger at the lips and the index finger above the upper lip. I saw a picture somewhere of Fred Bear with him focused on the target and his hand at anchor.  I thought that if I used that style of anchor and felt for the root of my right canine tooth though my upper lip I'd have a consistent anchor point. But the problem was I couldn't get that anchor point to feel comfortable if get it at all with my vertical bow position.

Then it occurred to me that the shooters with that anchor style also had the bow canted several degrees off of vertical. So I tried shooting the bow with several different amounts of cant until that anchor style felt good and was easily repeatable. And man did things change.

My grip on the bow became more relaxed and consistent. I could pickup the arrow in my secondary vision better and I started to occasionally get that "Bow shooting where I looked" everyone talks about.

I discovered all this near the end of my shooting session when I was getting tired so I'll have to wait until my next session to work on that style of shooting some more. I can't wait!        :D

Good for you! I learned to shoot with the bow canted and my body bent slightly at the waist. I tried shooting with everything upright and am amazed how poorly I shot. Bottom line, keep the basics in mind and adjust your stance to fit your shooting style.
