Anyone from Fairbanks
« on: January 08, 2008, 10:33:00 PM »
I will be arriving in Fairbanks on May 30, this year, with two other guys for a spring black bear hunt.
Can anyone recommend a motel close to the airport. I looked on line but would rather get some info from someone from there.

Thanks for any help.

the airport is so close to town that anything in Fairbanks proper would be easy access.

Yup it is....I'd recommend a B&B.   My wife knows of a couple good ones and she's not home yet.....I'll post them when she finally shows up  ;) .

Oh I assume you are talking Fairbanks Alaska?   If so I live about 15 mn from the airport. Not sure if I'll be boat skippering again this summer or not.  If not and ya need a ride let me know.

Having stayed there numerous times, I would highly recommend the Captain Bartlett hotel.

Pikes water front  hotel has it all , and is within walking distance of airport. What is your plan for the bear hunt?

There is actually a brand new one a bit closer then Pikes Water Front. Don't know the name. But next to Pike's is the Princess Lodge. Fairbanks has a lot of hotel space as well as the afore mentioned B&B's. But be aware and book early as tourist season is heading into high gear by then. It is not uncommon for the town to be "full" then. I hate having to have to come to town then. Also be prepared for some sticker shock as rates change sharply from winter to summer about the 1st of May.

Where are you hunting?

Money is no consideration, I take it? A cab ride from the airport to a "cheap" motel at $95 a night (which we declined to stay at due to loud-partying drunk locals)was my experience several years ago, so my wife and I, who had come prepared to camp and hunt, slept in the bushes rather than there or another cheap, but no-locals motel at $135. I've since made friends there, which makes all the difference. Based on my admittedly limited 5 trips to AK, I would go somewhere based out of Anchorage rather than Fairbanks, considering cost, hunting quality, town and bush experience, and hunting quality. In fact, if I were going for blackies up north, I'd do BC instead of AK. In any event, you'll have an adventure. dave

When I go to Fairbanks, I'm kinda fond of Reverend Scotty's Inn. Too bad he don't advertise much any more. His wife Beth is the best cook south of the Arctic Circle, Scotty is funnier than anyone you've ever seen on a late show or SNL. Jack Russell terrier Halbert is their feisty lil bell hop, a variety of 3d targets in the parking lot and humble accommodations, not much else to ask for. Been there twice, can't wait to get back.   ;)   - eric

Last time when I pulled into the registration office, there were fresh moose parts a hangin.  :)

Thanks for the replies.

We will be on a float plane on may 31 and flying some were along the Tanana River, then back out on the June 7. We will be hunting with Alaska Bearfoot Outfitters

Dan, it would be great to meet you, not for a ride we have that, just to  BS a little maybe I can PM you for your phone # when I leave for the hunt.

Dave2old, already hunted BC never been to Alaska.

Thanks All

Reading Dave2olds post made me remember the drunk factor in Fbks. So I would amend my answer to recommend the places near the airport or a B&B.
Unless you count listening to drunks as a taste of local culture, I would not take the chance. You want to be rested up for your hunt. I am not saying

oops..
I am not saying FBKS is teeming with drunks, but the lower price places might not be the best option for a restful night.

Who's dat bald headed guy hanging out by the meat rack?

Not everyone is suited to the accomodations at "the Inn" but feel free to drop me a PM.

IF I am in town, we can make it happen, shoot both the breeze and some arrows ( and maybe even that dang Jack Russell)

Things should be slow for me in the spring. I haul fuel up the Dalton and am making two to three trips a week now. Meet myself coming and going it seems in the winter.

Nice photo Eric. You should post one of all those grouse you killed.

kinda funny someone should mention drunks.  was on my way home tonight from my inlaws when less then 1 block from the home front, someone was getting a field soberiety test.

And less then 2 weeks ago there was a fatal dui accident that took place at the same intersection.

Btw, hey Scotty!  Don't be a stranger you million mile trucker dude  ;) .

John, sounds good shoot me a line when ya get some time.
