No but there will be a seminar at the PBS gathering in Pittsburgh in late March from a true expert on ray bowfishing.

Here might be the guy Steve is talking about.  That's Rob Davis from Maryland, the Dean of ray shooting and a younger version of myself with a pretty big southern stingray (142 lb) I killed with Rob around 1994.  If you get a chance to chew that fat with Rob jump at it....he is a fascinating guy!

He is selling a book called FAFFY (Flinging Arrows for Fifty Years), I think I saw contact info in a recent TBM.  He doesn't guide (professionally anyhow) but may know someone who does.

While I've never chased stingrays, I lived five minutes from the chesapeake bay for three years, right around the bay bridge.  The rays show up during early summer for the spawining season and can be seen sometimes in schools of twenty or more!  If you monitor or search on some tidal fishing boards you can probably pinpoint thIe best time to go.  I don't know of anyone who specifically guides for them, but if you check the Maryland section here at tradgang you may be able to hook up with someone with more experience than me!  My observations were that a 15 ft or larger johnboat with outboard would work well and then cruise the small back bays looking for the schools.  The wind will be a big factor in what size boat is safe.  This was in the area where I lived though, and again its mostly just theory.  But if you have the boat I'd be happy to tag along and point out some spots worth trying!  I need to get that FAFFY book.

Hey Gil, I'm (originally) from the Eastern Shore of MD/DE- I'm guessing you've never seen the horseflies, deerflies, and giant mosquitos buzzing around the bay and marshes.

Shoot, that little swatter probably won't even kill them outright, but it might stun them long enough to put an arrow in 'em!

The flyswatter also works for the FIRST time you miss a ray....the second time Rob might smack you with an oar!


That ray was from Chinquoteage (SP?) Bay near Assateague (SP?) island.  We could see the little ponies standing around in the marsh grass when we were hunting.

DMM you can contact Rob at 410-749-9520. He is getting older now(early 80's), but he is still a tough old bird. I have gone with Rob a number of times and have always had a good time chasing Rays. The largest Ray I have taken with Rob was a 134Lber. But as already have been mentioned he will be at the PBS Banquet, and I am sure he will be promoting his new book FAFFY(flinging arrows for fifty years) and then you should get the chance to pick his brain.Hope this helps
